Depends, does it run well? Will your banshee take 115hp, is your 65 Horse Johnson working for you? What are you trying to accomplish? Speed? Reliability? If it needs work can you fix it?
The inline 6 115 HP Merc is a nice engine in the right application.
If your asking my opinion on whether or not a 115 Merc belongs on a 15.5 foot boat my answer would be no.

I have a '79 Merc 115 on a 15'5" Mark twian Tri Hull and it runs pretty good. I think my my prop is a power type prop and can get 36-38 MPH out of it. My tri hull is probably a little heavy.

if your boat is rated for the 115,then you will see a huge improvement. you will need all the merc controls etc.

If nothing else...If its a deal of the century, and in working order.I would buy it.Invest a little time and tune parts in it.Then sell it,and make a small profit.;)

I do have a 16' sidewinder with an 115 merc, and she handles fine, and has good speed.

NO, it is NOT OK to over power a boat.

Many states have enacted laws against this very thing as a result of too many boating accidents, and fatalities, from over powered boats transoms failing, sinking the boat.

More states have legislation pending.

When, not if, but when you are checked by the Water Patrol, you will be escorted to the ramp and removed from the water, ticketed and heavily fined.

well after some investigating it is NOT illegal to put a bigger outboard motor on some thing that is rated for a smaller motor,BUT the insurance will definitely be more , now where is that 115 merc ,lol
