Help request for 6hp cd24 d

I have recently acquired a 6hp cd24 d, a 1967 model I believe. The problem: it will start with fuel sprayed manually into the carb, but will only keep running if fuel is continuously sprayed into the carb. Here is what I have done so far:
1. Checked the fuel pump by disassembling and reassembling. All parts look good, no rips or tears in diaphragms
2. Cleaned all carb ports, including removing core plug to check low speed inlets. All clean
3. Float measured with Johnson tool, at proper level and drops within specs.
4. New fuel and oil 50:1 mix, new fuel line from gas tank to motor, new fuel line from motor fuel pump to carb.
5. All carb parts look good.
6. Lean/rich needle valve cleaned, repacked with new gaskets, gently seated then backed out one turn.
7. Good spark at both plugs, plugs clean.

Why won't this $%^@"! motor run...! Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Does it make any difference if the primer bulb is pumped while it is running? Also, the initial setting is 1.5 to 2 turns out on the low speed needle.

Your problem could be item #6. The low speed needle valve should be backed out 1-1/2 turn. You may also need to do a throtlle cam adjustment. If you don't have an OEM manula for the motor, I highly recommend getting one.

Thanks for replying. I should have said I also tried backing the needle valve out 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2, etc turns...still won't keep running.
Yes, I tried pumping the primer bulb...still won't keep running.
I have the OEM manual that describes the throttle cam adjustment. I'll give that a shot next. Thanks.

My guess is a stuck float needle not letting the carb bowl fill, or the float is upside down. O.k., that's two guesses. I'll be thinking of a third.:)

Here's the third: Make sure the fuel pump is actually working by pulling the fuel line at the carb, put the line in a can, and cranking the motor. I've put together too many fuel pumps the wrong way to not check anymore....

JB, thanks for your 3 suggestions.
1.) I took the carb apart and checked the float needle, it is clean and in good shape. It moves with the float. I reassembled the carb and opened the drain plug at the bottom of the carb and fuel drained out, when I squeeze the bulb fuel pours out. Looks like it is getting fuel.
2.) The float was checked using the OEM Johnson Part that checks the level and the drop. Both are spot on to the recommended settings.
3.) I thought this was the one, but the fuel pump appears to be working. I did as you suggested and removed the line at the carb and cranked the engine. Fuel dribbled out with each crank. I also fired up the engine while the line was off [by spraying fuel in the carb] and fuel came out of the line. Maybe a longer fuel line and just run it into the front of the carb...just kidding!

The other suggestion I received about the cam assembly was interesting. I compared the OEM repair manual specs to my setting and it appears to be correct. The cam just begins to open the throttle plat with the throttle control in the Start position.

I can get the motor to run [by spraying fuel in the carb] and shift into forward and reverse no problem. This motor 'wants' to run...it seems it just is not getting fuel the right way. Why does it run with sprayed fuel and not the normal way....? I'll keep poking at it.
Again, thanks for your thoughts. Isn't boating wonderful....:~}

Re: Help request for 6hp cd24 d

have you checked the line going to the motor. A bad check valve in the bulb can be the problem. Also if you are using the old float needle without the wire clip to attach it will hang closed and no fuel will get to the bowl. How about the gasket between the high speed nozzle and the float bowl? new? used with no cracks?
