Help me with this..some of my friends don't think I can tow a 15 and 1/2 foot Thundercraft ski boat with an 80hp Mercury. I'm towing with a 1997 F150 5-SPEED V8 4.6L. I believe I will be fine. But I think I can win this bet.

You won't even know its there. I tow my 1900 lbs rig with 2001 F150 5.4L V8 4x4, by far the best truck I have had pleasure owning. The acceleration is great, massive break authority simply cannot ask for a better vehicle.
Sounds like your friends are Ford haters![]()
Well, I hate to break ranks with everybody on this thread saying your friends have no clue, but there is a huge difference in tow ratings between an automatic and a 5-speed manual in a half ton truck.5-SPEED V8 4.6L
Well, I hate to break ranks with everybody on this thread saying your friends have no clue, but there is a huge difference in tow ratings between an automatic and a 5-speed manual in a half ton truck.
Here are the 5-speed ratings published by Ford:
4.6L MANUAL TRANSMISSION 2WD
Supercab........3.08 axle........2000 lbs
Reg Cab..........3.08 axle........2300 lbs
Super Cab.......3.55 axle........3300 lbs
Reg Cab..........3.55 axle........3500 lbs
If the truck was an automatic, the ratings would be between 5600 and 7200 lbs so it is very obvious that Ford felt better about you towing with an automatic than a 5-speed.
I hope your truck has the 3.55 axle as the 3.08 would be a real dog towing. You can check the ratio on the driver's door tag:
3.08 - 18 or 28 (open)
3.08 - H8 or B8 (limited slip)
3.55 - 19 or 29 (open)
3.55 - H9 or B9 (limited slip)
What ratio do you have?
Ummmm, automatics EAT HP and Torque, not multiply it.
The automatic transmission has advantage over manual in towing scenario due to its hydrostatic nature. During low speeds the automatic transmission transfers torque via hydraulic pressure in the torque converter, not a direct friction plate contact as in manual tranny. As the result the transmission fluid is circulated through the heat exchanger which allows it to dissipate excess heat very quickly. The manual transmission on the other hand tends to build up heat and as result degrade under heavy load high slip scenarios.
Overall the original poster should have no problems considering light load of his rig. However Shrub88 has a valid point, manual tranny tow ratings are significantly lower in most cases on small trucks vs automatic variants.
