My mercury 95' is giving me problems won't go past 4800 rpms until about 2-3 min into a run...then goes up to 5300 where it should be...also is sluggish out of the hole....and it smokes at all rpms...any suggestions....i don't rely on oil injection...so what mix of gas and two stroke should it be???I was told 50:1....help please

50:1 is the correct ratio. Is the sluggishness a new developement? What prop are you using?

What ratio of fuel/oil have you been using? My first inclination would be that the gas/oil mix has too much oil.

Re: 150 Black Max Issues

I'm using a quicksilver laser 2 prop 25 pitch....yes the sluggishness is new along with only gettin 4800 rpms....but i don't know why it's jumps up to 5300 after a while in a run and it runs like it's suppose too after a couple of minutes in a run...then I shut down and go to start again and it's the same thing sluggish out of the hole and only 4800 rpms...I've been mixin 50:1...but I pulled the plugs just now and there's oil deposits on all the plugs so i'm thinkin it's gettin to much oil which may be causin the sluggish ness and the smoke that's why I was askin about the gas to oil mix...think I should try a different ratio like 35 to 1 or somethin???????/

Re: 150 Black Max Issues

35 : 1 is (NOT) LESS oil, and you DO NOT want to run less then 50 :: 1
(Edited cause I went Brain Dead)

How old are those dirty spark plugs?

RPM hanging around 4800 then as the soot/oil accumulation burns off, then the engine pulls on up to the desired RPM often is an indicator that it is time for a new set of plugs.

Try that first, and repost with the results.

Not trying to knit-pick CharlieB but 35:1 is MORE oil than 50:1. 35 gallons of gas for every gallon of oil as compared to 50 gallons of gas for every gallon of oil.

I think it is a fuel issue, not necessarily with your mixture. Try completely draining your fuel cell and start over with fresh gas with stabilizer. Many of my friends are having problems with the higher ethanol content. You won't believe some of the gunk we've pulled out of our tanks. One of them had an ethanol/oil sludge in the bottom of the tank causing some of the same problems you describe. The fuel stabilizer seems to keep the gas and ethanol from separating.

D'oh!

Just proves once again, I can STILL go brain dead.

35:1 IS a LOT more oil, still it is NOT necessary on a 'normally loaded' motor running at/near rated RPM.

If you have modified the motor and are running about 7, THEN the additional oil is highly recommended. But you would also need to rejet the carbs, change plugs, timing, etc.. None recommended for a 'stock' motor.

Re: 150 Black Max Issues

Oil ratio is determined by extensive factory testing to ensure substantial engine life AND spark plug reliability.

More oil can extend piston/ring/bearing life at the expense of radically shortening spark plug life and lessening reliability out on the water.

Since most of us cannot walk home from out on the water, fail to carry a spare set of plugs and a wrench, AND don't care too much to be hanging off the backside of the boat when the wind and waves come up, we run our engines at or very near the factory recommended ratings.

LOLOL....nothings better then hanging off the back of the boat in the middle of a bass tournament in the middle of lake and everybody looks the other way as if your not there using a trolling motor in about 80' of water!!!!
