fill procedure

I have 4 holes from bottom to top 1. to drain way below 2. for the shift dog 3. ? thought that was the top plug 4. way up top by the shift lever flange is this the spot i should be filling this to > second question is if I can use regular gear oil?

I can answer your second question... No, you have to use the marine grade oil specified for the model.
In order for others to pipe in and help you should provide engine model number or at very least the model year and horsepower.

sorry its a 1996 40 hp evinrude and I already took it out actually I always do thats where I thought FULL was im guessing that it should be the one way up top

okay the one that I take in and out all the time is called a retaining screw WHAT DOES IT RETAIN?????? AND HOW DO I KNOW THAT I DIDNT SCREW ANY THING UP ? I knew that i shouldnt have attempted this

The phillips screw (really a pin) anchors the shift yoke. If you got it back in, and the motor shifts OK, then consider yourself lucky.

To change the oil, take out both big slotted screws, let the oil drain, then pump the oil through the bottom hole until it comes out the top hole. Put the top screw in, then pull out the pump and quickly put in the bottom screw.

You do have a manual for this motor, don't you?

thank you thats what I though now and NO I havent got a manual. hence all the problems lately.
