I have a Johnson 70 that I want to take off my boat so I can do some work on it. Not totally remove it but get it off transom. What's a good way of doing it, provided I don't have an engine hoist.

You could use a ladder (put to a V) and use a "winch"..??

never a ladder, if your garage, has open ceiling, you can put a 4x4 across the joist, and use a come a long hoist.

The joist in the garage are open. Do you mean to attach a 4 x 4 across the joists or to cut & attach between the joists?

Use an 8' 4x4 ... which should span 5 joists if they're spaced at 18" ... and that should spread the load sufficiently to lift a 70hp motor (maybe 250 lbs?) safely!

just lay the 4x4 on top of the joist, no cutting, etc, attach puller to center of 4x4.

You don't actually even need a hoist, just a strong enough chain. Lower the front of the trailer all the way, then attach the chain as tight as you can and crank up the front to lower the motor, taking the weight on the chain.

I think most 70s have a lifting loop stock but be careful of the motor tilting as it comes off the bolts.

Good luck getting it off the chain though.

Would using a wooden outdoor swing structure rated to hold 550 pounds & a chain hoist to hook to motor's lift ring work? After looking my garage is not open, the floor joists & flooring are just exposed.

I have a 1982 70 hp three weeks ago had to pull it off easy enough to do with two people putting it back on by myself was fun.

That should work, assuming there's enough space between the motor's lift ring and the cross member on the swing to hang the chain hoist.
