I have a 2003 merc 50 that I just changed the trim motor on. It is the 2 wire one. I can hear the motor working but it is not moving the outboard up or down. Am I supposed to bleed it or something? Any input is greatly appreciated!!

Re: power tilt/trim motor

If the trim motor runs but the engine does not trim, the next step is to bleed it. Run the trim motor in the up direction and lift the motor by hand until it is tilted all the way up and lock it up. Now remove the trim unit fill plug and fill it with Dextron III ATF fluid (boat should be level). Cycle it doen and up and refill it. You may have to help it the first few times. Let it sit between cycles to let air bubble out and then refill it and cycle it.

Re: power tilt/trim motor

Thank you for responding! I tried to help the motor trim up but I could not budge it without turning out the manual release screw. I put it all the way up with the manual r.s. and then turned the screw in and tried to push it down while holding the trim button down it will move down when I put all my weight on it but it wont do anything by itself. Tried several times. Is it possible when I installed it the little blades did not line up or something? The new trim motor is running fine just not moving the outboard. Thanks again!

It sounds like it it time to check the trim motor. Make sure the trim motor's armature is fittong into and reaching the pump assembly.

Re: power tilt/trim motor

Took it apart again and no change. Could someone explain how this pump works? Do the blades just touch each other or am I missing a piece between them? Sorry to be a pain in the a** but I dont have the money to take it to someone! Thanks!!

Re: power tilt/trim motor

The motor obviously needs to mate with the pump. Sometimes there are some challenges.

I installed an aftermarket(ARCO) PTT Pump motor on my Merc V6. The motor was made to fit different applications, by using a small armature extension fitting with a hex end. if you are using an aftermarket PTT motor, look it up on the web and verify it fits your application, and see if you can find the instructions for it.

Re: power tilt/trim motor

The new trim motor looks identical to the old one (oem?). The t/t motor and the unit it mounts to both have what looks like blades ][. I have tried to line them both up when installing but I have no idea how it works. Is there supposed to be something between them or do they just sit on top of each other or side by side? I would love to know how it works! Thanks for your time and any info.!

Re: power tilt/trim motor

Maine, That motor's PTT assembly shows some sort of coupler that connects to the end of the PTT motor. Go to the crowleymarine.com web site and look it up by make, year and HP. in the parts catalog. It is number 16 on the PTT diagram. I would think it is a prime candidate to be the issue.

Thanks!! That is the problem. I will take it apart and see if it is in there somewhere. Did you notice that #16 is not listed? I hope I can find it! Thank you very much for finding that! Much appreciated!!
