Just got my boat out of storage today. Decided to rotate the tires.

The rig was new last year, so I was a little surprised to see a bit of rust on a couple of the lug nuts.

Got me thinking what it would be like out on the highway with a flat and lug nuts that were all rusty from neglect. It's probably a good idea to check those little buggers once in a while, especially if you don't rotate the tires on a regular basis.

Re: Lug nuts

I put a dab of aluminum anti-seize compound on the wheel studs of my freshwater trailer (cars/trucks too) and it keeps them in good condition, never had a problem busting them loose or getting rusty.

BUT, I've heard aluminum anti-seize is the kiss of death on saltwater trailers, galvanic corrosion locks the lug nuts to the studs

Should be "cracked" and re-tightened every season in my book.

Re: Lug nuts

Any kind of lube on the lugs will help prevent them from seizing. I use a graphite based Never Seize compound on mine, if that's not handy, just plain grease will work too. I also keep my hubs, springs and axles well painted. If you run aluminum wheels, greasing the hub and flange is also needed to prevent the wheel from sticking to the hub.

I don't mess with tire irons,
I carry a 24 inch breaker bar and deep impact sockets.
