First time posting....

I hope someone can help.

I have a 1988 E50 electric start.

Background: Clean new fuel, Brand new starter just put it in today, battery supposed to be new, cables cleaned today and all connections are clean and corrosion free. using heavy duty battery cables not warming up.

Problem is that when i turn the key, the starter goes and tries to start the engine, sounds and looks like it is cranking correctly. doesnt start, it has always been a slow starter when cold.
try it again, good speed, try it again, and i hear the Wah, 1 second pause, Wah, again paus, wah, stop and try again, same thing try's to crank but nothing. stop, try again, and the starter starts going at normal spead again, go through all these steps a few times and finally it turns over.

let it run for a few minutes,

turn it off, and try to turn it back on, the starter doesnt even need to turn once, and it is on, like a charm.

wait a few minutes till it gets cold, and goes back to the begining, couple of good turns on the starter, and the the wah, pause wah.... etc...

overall the engine is in good shape, clean, new plugs, just bought the boat a month ago.

Please let me know if you have any ideas.

thank you

PS. once it is running, it runs great, can go up and down the bay without a problem, just issues with starting it sometimes.

Make sure to pump up the ball until it is hard and then before you try to start, turn the key to the "on" position and push the key in for a second or 2 now with the key pushed in try to start it.

With the engine off, key on,push key in, you should hear the primer soleniod click.

I have tried the primer and i do hear the solenoid click in.

Im just not sure whey sometimes the starter runs fast and sometimes it is like the battery is discharged, and then on the next time i turn the key, it goes back to cranking fine. this happens even after slow charging the battery and it shows a full charge on the battery.

oh, and this is all after squeezing the Primer ball as well. I always have that primed until you can not squeeze it any more.

remove your stater, that it to a starter/aternator shop and have it tested.

This is a brand new starter, the original starter performed the exact way. I swapped them out yesterday.

do you think it could be something like too much compression? is that even possible?

Make sure the ground to eng block is clean and tight, also sometimes these cables can corrode from the inside out. Feel around both cables for bulge. It sounds as though you have som high resistance somwhere.
