This may be a stupid question but I need to remove the lower engine cover to get the shift linkage off to do some repairs. The question is what all do I have to do to get the cover off. It looks like I have to pull the engine? Is this the case or am I missing something? Thanks for the help

Should be able to get to the linkage with a 1/4" knuckle on a skinny socket and a variety of extensions. Some folk take the carb assembly off to get to it. What motor is it anyway ??

Re: Lower engine cover

It is an '86 50 hp j50BELCDE. The reason I think I need to take the cover off is that I am missing a bushing that holds the connecting rod in place. The rod that goes between the shift rod and the linkage. I dont think that I can get that off without taking the cover off?

Not sure what bushing you are speaking of, or how it got out of there, but one thing is for sure, the lower cover won't come off without removing the powerhead. Besides, the shift cross-linkage goes through holes drilled in the front case of the powerhead. So, in a worst-case situation, the powerhead might have to come off, I dunno. I still wonder how it got out of there.

Re: Lower engine cover

You were right about the lower cover not coming off but I was able to take it loose and move it enough to get to the linkage. The bushing I was talking about is just a little plastic bushing that is split so that it will slip over the cross shaft. The bushing goes on the shaft where it goes through the bottoms of the block just behind the shift linkage. Im trying to add a pic too, not sure how clear it will be but the bushing does not have a part number but it is just to the right of part 37.

You may have to reduce the size of your pic as it may be too large to post here.
