Hey guys, and any gals. I have a 77 470 mercruser. I been having problems with it starting. I've replaced the battery with new. Changed the solenoid, rebuilt the starter and had it bench tested. And after all this it wont turn over. The starter makes a wierd sound almost like it's tring to ingage. I'm at a lost and just my luck no place around here will work on it. I love the boat and it keeps the peace with the wife, that is when it's running. Please anyone got an idea. Will help keep the marrage. LOL... Thanks

Yes the ring gear is good. If it helps no power to the key but the curcit isn't triped. All wires to soleniod are are hooked up and to starter. Starter is a new rebuild and was tested latter at a shop and is good.

Ayuh,.... Which is it,..??

No Power means No Noise.... Yet you say it's grinding....

Can you turn the motor by hand,..?? Maybe it's Siezed...

Re: 470 Mercruse

What color were the plugs,
When did it run last
How old is the riser
Heres a couple of backyard tests:
at the starters main lug where the battery attaches, short this to ground. should get a big fat spark. Yes: cable connections and battery ok. No, find out why.
short the battery lug to the small lug on the solenoid, this should trip the starter and turn the motor.Yes/No??
No, motors seized. possably a hole in the riser allowing water to sit in #4 cylinder

Thanks for all the help.. I have finaly got it to turn over. The problem was the solenoid was wired backwords. Go figure. Now new problem!!! When I turn the key to the acssery position it turns over I don't even have to turn it to run. The solenoid is wired like this...... On the starter side large post is batt. orange, red w/ blue strip, and red wire going to the curciet switch. Next small terminal is purpple gose to positive on coil. Next small terminal is yellow w/ red strip and its the starter wire. Final large post front of engien is the lage yellow and ti go's to the starter. And it turns over the engien now. So why dose the key run in the acsessery position??????? I've replaced with new switch and it still dose it. Please help... I haven't drove it in 2 years now because of all the problems it has hade.... Thank you..
