Cruising about 1/2 throttle yesterday and engine died three times. Restarted fine, strong water flow out of pump, sounded fine. Getting plent of gas and oil. Restarted and ran WOT about 1/2 mile and then DEAD. Tried to restart and it would only run 2-3 secs at most. Powerhead was warm, not hot by any stretch. Made it in with trolling motor. 98 115 Johnson. Ideas?

Re: Dead Motor...

Did the fuel line bulb collapse while running? Try pumping the bulb when it's acting up. If it helps, look to your fuel pump. Sounds like a fuel issue to me. You might have some crap in the fuel line/filter.

Check this out:

Immediately, check spark when the motor will not run. See if the increased temp is causing ignition failure.

Went down to try to crank it today- nothing. Bulb is tight. I just had a mechanic unfreeze the starter last week and put new plugs in and it really sounded good until, as I say, there was just a fluttering for a few seconds at WOT and then nothing. It would only crank a for a couple of seconds after that, and now nothing. Guess I'll haul it back over there.

Mechanic says all 4 cylinders register dead on 120. He's pretty sure it's the powerpack. The stator looks good.

i guess part of that labor charge is the time spent diagnosing the problem because it took me all of 30 minutes to install my PP.
Meanwhile diagnosis took me 3 days!
At least you are back in the water.:)

Well, my mechanic is actually my gf's 81 yr. old uncle. He's got a big shop in his backyard in a bad part of town and all he's done for the last 35 years is work on 2 cycle engines...outboards, chainsaws, lawnmowers, ad nauseum. If it weren't for guys like him, I can't see how the average working man could stay on the water. Definitely a blessing for a screwup like myself.:)
