new to the forums, have a few questions. first off i just took the boat out for the first run of the summer. Ran great! i have a 96 maxum with the 4.3 merc and the alpha 1. i noticed the the oil gauge was all the way at 80 the hole time under way. when it was at idle it would be about 40 psi. i just changed the oil and filter. was wondering what the norm was. next there seemed not to be a wot control. i no it called a governor on a car but dont know what it is called on a boat. it would run 6000 rpm or more where it normally is about 5000. it did in gauge a few time on my hour or so ride, the idle rpms were kinda high too right around 1000 i no it should be 600 to 650. over then that the boat seemed strong planed nice and had good throttle response. just those 2 things worry me. thanks in advance

Re: first run of the season

Here is the specs for your engine......
the pro's will chime in soonhttp://www.perfprotech.com/store/articles/mercruiser-v6-engine-specifications.aspx

your wot is too high make sure it is correct, hook up a shop tac to your engine....could be a gauge problem with both(electrical issues)... do they bounce around or stay steady???? with the wot issue...what prop are you running???? could it be a spun prop???

Ditto on the tach check. If you can, get to the back of the tach, check/clean the connections but more importantly, there is usually a selector back there that tells the tach what no of cylinders or poles on the motor so it displays accurately. Wiggle that adjustmant, and make sure it is pointing to the proper setting. it is always possible the tach is bad.

Hi there. There probably is no rev limiter on that engine.

its not a spun prop new ss last year ran fine last year right before i put it away. it does not bounch around stays steady. funny thing it did seem to have more power it reached 54mph and planed very fast. ill check the settings on the tack i was under there replacing the fuel gauge so maybe i hit it or corrosion built up over the winter.

as far as the oil pressure that is right?

Re: first run of the season

with the oil pressure @ 80 wot you got to remember your running 1,200 rpm faster than you should be @ wot... mark the prop and check it, weirder things have happened....last year you ran 5,000 now 6,000 you have to confirm that your tac is correct (shop tac)..then report back to us.

well looks like the settings on the back of the tack got moved from 6 cyl to 4 cyl. how do you "shop test it" i dont think anything is wrong now that i changed the setting but that oil still has me worried. im kinda questioning the filter part number he had to look it up a few time i felt fishy about it but he said it was the right one and it fit so i went with it nut now idk. thanks for all the help and the fast responds

Ayuh,... Check the wire for the oil sender on the motor,...
You could always T in a mechanical gauge to check the dash gauge...

Cold oil, at WOT, 80psi would not be outa line,...
My 4.3 was running exactly 1/2 the #s your's was posting, today... 20psi. at idle,+ 40psi Runnin'....
