All,
Just bought a '95 Wellcraft Excell with a mercruiser 3.0LX. For a fourteen year old boat it is in great shape. I decised to change the oil today and came down to changing the filter. However the filter seamed to be brazed on, so I used a old filter wrench on and broke a hole in the filter. Next I did the only thing I've done in the passed and drove a flat head through the hole and through the other side thinking that this old trick would work. NOT! Before I knew it I ended up mangling the filter and my hand in the process, only leaving the filter striped down to the aluminum ring which the filter screws onto. I have tried everything to get this thing off;from placing a flat head slightly into one of the holes and tapping with a hammer, to trying it the opposite direction, to prying into the seal, and nothing. The only other solution I can think of is to get a socket big enough to free the filter stud going into the block, and just replacing that. If anyone has any other solution I will be in your debt. Please help me! Thanks!

Re: Stuck Oil Filter

I used a dremmel once to cut the main filter off down to the mateing surface. Then I cut some groves in the base to fit a flat tip screw driver. I used the driver and hammer to get it off. It took some doing but it came.

Welcome to the forums.

Are you turning it the correct direction? :D

I am joking, but I have seen it many times where someone turns a fastener or valve the wrong direction. Expecially when you are looking the opposite direction that is "normal".
