Hi Everyone , I have a 1980 johnson 175 with some fuel problems ...

I just sunk a pretty penny into this motor getting it tuned up and ready and when I left the mechanics shop he informed me that the motor runs great , compression is excellent yada yada yada.

The motor is mounted on a ranger boat 1980 275v with mounted in aluminum gas tanks . I can get the motor to run off the tanks BUT the new primer ball goes flat when the motor runs and I know it shouldnt, I put on the line a new filter , new primer ball , new valve connector . What would make that ball go flat ? Like I said I know it shouldn't I know the ball should be inflated and hard like a rock. Any suggestions would be great ...

The only time the bulb should be hard, is when first priming at the start of the day. When running, the bulb relaxes somewhat, but stays in normal shape. If the engine fuel pumps suck the ball flat, that is a problem. That's a fuel restriction. Can be caused by bad ball valves in the hose bulb, a restriction in the anti-siphon valve in the head of the built-in tank, or a restriction in the tank pickup tube. If you are running the original hose connections, I'd suggest an alternative. Remove the hose connector from the lower cowl and remove the 3/8 hose connector at the engine end of the hose. Run the bare hose through the new lower cowl hole and connect it right to the hose barb on the pump. Make sure you have a sweeping hose bend under the cowl so the hose does not kink. The original hose connectors can be problematic and they were changed in the 1985 model year-requiring the hose to be clamped to the redesigned cowling barb.
