I've got a 1957 evinrude 35 hp that starts 2nd pull and runs great.

I've just found an ad for a 35hp parts motor that the seller claims is a johnson. It looks like an evinrude to me.

My question is, what year evinrude and johnson motors have the same (or at least many of the same) parts?

johnson/evinrude are the same motor different exterior, 56,57, 58, 59 have a lot of the same parts. some parts thru the 60's also work.

I have a 58 rude 35 hp BT, and the only difference I've seen is 2 instead of 1 water pump tube. There may be some other minor differences but they would probably be cheap differences.

excellent, thanks. I can probably get that motor for $50. I would only have to use a couple parts from it to make it worth that...

1957 was almost the last year for the single tube cooling system. They made one in 1958, but shifted over to the two-tube system that year, with the RDS-20 for Johnson and the Lark for Evinrude.

I think you can go back to 1955 with the lower units. Most of the other parts will be OK as well, but not the lower units after the 1958 models that had the single tube cooling system.

You can adapt carbs, starters, and other such engine items from several years.

For $50, I'd grab that one.

As the others said...OMC/Johnson/Evinrude of that era are pretty interchangeable. Nice motors, easy to refurb and great runners.

I got my parts motor with the purchase of my runner. The parts motor was +/- $100 added to the running motor I had.

When my pinion gear was shot, I walked inside, pulled one from the parts motor and that was it.

Without a parts motor, you'd have to get the right part number, order it, + pay for shipping, wait until the part shows up, and reassemble from memory or 2 dimensional schematics that may or maynot be right.

Hope this helps,
-Josh

I have this same question. I have a 57 Evinrude 18hp and am looking at a johnson 18hp that the guy says is a 60's. I'm wondering if I would get my money out of it as well.

Welcome to iboats rwood.

This thread is a couple years old, might want to start yourself a new one for your own particular problem. That is a great motor, and you will get plenty of help. Just dont want things to get confusing with piggybacking posts.
