Could be several things...have you tracked down the leak? Some Martins were notorious for leaking out of the gas cap...poor design and rubber seal. Could be a pin hole in the tank or could be leaking from the tank/tank-ring gasket. Remove the tank, drain it safely, let it dry than put some water in the tank and track it down. Plain old rubbing alcohol will evaporate the water residue from the tank after you find the leak, pour out the water, etc., to fix it.

Thank you. All that makes perfect sense and is good information. I will set about doing these things this next weekend and let you know how I made out.

Thanks again.

Motor apart. All gaskets at carb are leaking badly. Have ordered new ones. Do they go on dry or how do you prepare gaskets for installation. I am a real novice with a new hobby. Thanks

A tight, dry fit...tighten bolts, nuts evenly. That should take care of leaks.

Thanks again. It is my plan to restore. Motor runs very well so when leaks are fixed I hope that solves problem. I am sure I will have more questions. Thanks for your help.

Your welcome...that's why Iboats forums exist. You've been to www.martinoutboards.com haven't you? Russ is the expert on these old motors...fascinating history about George Martin, on the web if you can find it. I think George is still alive and well.

Good Luck with it Whale002 and keep us posted. My dad and brother seem to be trying to corner the market on Martins and keep bringing them home. VERY smooth engines, but most need to be gone thru completely to make them right. My grandfather worked a couple years in the Martin factory in Wisconsin, so my dad grew up with them.

Well, I have (with brother's help) disassembled the engine. Purchased parts from Mr. Larson, including new paint. Should be here this week. I also bought a canvas bag for a "40" off of ebay with a brand new propeller. Having big fun. Will keep you posted. My uncle and aunt both worked at Presto during the "Martin Years" Aunt in office, uncle in maintenance. They had a brand new "75" in the boathouse. Great engine.
