I have a 1983 Regal Ambassador

I been hearing alot of answer and i been readin alot also.

well i heard that the outdrive gets cool but just being in the water

so if the waterpump on the outdrive is not working and the engine is getting water directly from a pump. the oil on the outdrive or the outdrive it self should stay cool seens its on the water..??

Iam planning of putting a aluminum cover over the top of my sterndrive and put a hole in the middle of it and shower it with water from the sea so water will cool the engine from the top and water will drip to the buttom. so it may help.. what you think

I cool this pImpIng my BOAT. LOL..

Re: Outdrive Needs To be COOL?

The top half of your outdrive is NOT in the water when you're on plane. People make "drive showers" to cool it down, which supposedly make it run 40-50 degrees Farenheit cooler. Same thing you're talking about doing. See below:

Well Seens my Waterpump on my Sterdrive is demage. should i worry about the sterndrive heating up ??

The boat is not going to be use for any high speed. iam basicly just going to drive it for about 3 to 4 miles and stop .and i will just fish or ride my jetski

iam cooling the engine using a waterpump..

So far i could only find a 13GMP(Gallon Per Minute) is this enougth to cool both engines??? wizeman told me 15 to 25 GPM but i cant fine it..

Still trying to rig the cooling for these engines. Seriously fix it the way it should replace the impellers. Then you wont have to rig a shower on it either.

i could try to fix it.. It seems so difficult on this type of sterdrive.. i seen a video of how to replace impeller on the new drive. but my 1983 OMC Sterndrive is not making it so easy...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I doubt very seriously if anyone here will give you advise on how to jerry rig your cooling system. If you are searching for ideas on how to do it the wrong way I am sure that everyone here will ignore your thread. Like the previous poster said, buy the impellers and do the job the correct way and your engine will be cooled as it was intended. I'm sure that with all the effort and thought that you have put into designing and installing this WRONG cooling system you could have just as well bought the impellers and installed them in the drives.

Seriously.

Just get the parts and do the job or pay to have it done.

Changing an impeller on an OMC stringer is not difficult. It takes patience, finesse, and a good manual.
If you don't want to do it, drop the $400 or so to get a pro to do it.
If it hasn't been done in a few years, you need to go in there anyways to grease the splines of the w/p shaft.
If you don't grease those splines they will strip out.

at some point you have to get off the computer and go twist some wrenches. All this pie in the sky electric pump stuff is way more difficult to rig up than just replacing the impeller.

Those uppers run hot and the upper housing has cooling passages 360 degrees around. A drive shower would be a fart in a windstorm.
The boat is not going to be use for any high speed.
Drive showers only work at high speed

If you are going to start it, you are going to need to finish it. Mechanics really dislike coming in on a disassembled half way job. Some might do it but it might cost you more because they have to figure out what you did first.
The guys here will definitely help you fix it the right way.
