I have new Grizzly 1448 and looking into getting deck mount trolling motor. I never used the powerdrive type but have used cable type. I like idea of being able to move pedal around on boat and not have to fight big cable, but i heard steering is diff and takes getting use to. Just wondering what most of you guys have and what style you like better? pros/cons?

Electric steer motors take very little time to get used to. I've used both over the years and find the electric steer far easier to deal with. The Minnkota and MotorGuide electric steer motors also have very small footprints so they don't need a lot of deck space for mounting. Both motors are also available in wireless form (uses a key fob like a remote for your car to control speed and direction). You can also mount these motors on a quick release plate for travel or for removal if the boat must be stored outside. What ain't there can't be stolen.

I have a Terrove55 (minnkota) and have the autopilot, and the co-pilot(wireless system) and love it.

The electrics don't steer as quickly as a cable one, But they are pretty darn close. They are very nice and as silvertip stated they don't take long to get used too.

I have the MG Wireless w/keyfob and love it. I like the freedom to be anywhere in the boat. As stated above, it has a small footprint and comes with detachable mount.

You won't see a powered drive on professional bass boats. Main reasons are:
- Cable has more precise control (without viewing where head is pointed)
- Cable is a little quicker
- Cable style built to handle obstruction impacts better than powered drives

I have the same boat as you with a power drive minn. #55 I use it for jigging the rivers for walleye . I cant think of a better way to control the boat.I will never go back to cable.

My ole legs appreciate the fact I don't have to keep my foot on the pedal all the time like with a cable system. I've since went to co-pilot and its great.

Love the Minn Kota power drive. Much easier on the old legs and a breeze to get used to. I would suggest you get the auto-pilot as it is a great addition. Once I used the auto-pilot I would be lost without it.
