HI everyone,
ive got a problem with my 87 willian3. got into some shallow water thais past saturday and hit some rocks which imediatly stalled my motor. i started it back up and when i took off the boat was just about to plane off and it sounded like the prop came out of the water but it was actually something that let loose. there was no grinding but i can only go about 3 mph without having a rubber burning smell and the sound of the motor revving up to much and not moving any faster. talked to some mechanics and we narrowed it down the the engine coupler. problem is that is no longer in production and i cannot find one anywhere. the old part number is 984537. id really appreciate some input on what options i have or if someone knows where there might be a few left for sale. Thanks!

You should post this in i/o section. Some of the guys here can probably help you out. I have no knowledge with OMC, sorry.
Good luck.

Those couplers are NLA from OMC, and not made by any aftermarket manufacturers. Same with the 460 Exhaust manifolds and risers.
You now have to start watching ebay and craigslist and hope you find a good used one or some place with some new ones still on the shelf.
Couple of years ago a place in Florida (i think) had a few couplers and sold them for over $600 each.

Unless you can find one on Ebay you may want to check with these people,
http://www.performanceengines.ca/OMC-couplers.htm

The updated part number is 986232 if that helps...

Howdy,

This is probably your only choice in this.

They take your flywheel and re-drill it for an OMC coupler that is still available.

The price is $479 + shipping both ways......A bargain considering there's no real alternative.

When I was trying to fix my OMC 460, They were not available at any price.

Now all you have to do is find an alternative for your manifolds and risers......

I fixed mine a different way (see my signature)

Good luck,

Thanks for the suggestions. I talked to someone today that also said i could send out my flywheel to get redrilled and tapped for a more popular coupler. buuuut i dont want the screwing around so i called a few places in georgia and florida and ended up at a place in texas that had a good used one that i grabbed for $575. Back when they were still made new were only 429 but seeing that they have the only ones around i guess thay can name their price. hopefully this will work.

Pray your manifolds don't fail.

Well, yeah.....but more importantly, pray your used coupler doesn't fail...

Since you have to pull the engine anyway, I would do the "new" coupler It's cheaper and if it fails you can at least replace it with a coupler that's readily available.....

You are in the drivers seat though...

Good Luck!

That is why they suggested redrilling the flywheel to accept a more common coupler. A brand new coupler for $3-400 plus the machine work or a used coupler for $600. Sorry just not following your logic on this one.

Re: HELP 460 omc king cobra engine coupler

i know what your sayin with getting the flywheel retapped for a more common coupler but im trying to make this a quick fix rather than sending out my flywheel and waithing for it to come back. the site i saw for retapping says $479 that includes the retapping and the new coupler. i guess on this one im gonna be impatient and dont want to deal with the wait. the new coupler will be hear sat and will be in the water again sunday. and hopefully this time ill steer clear of any rocks. $600 dollar coupler. $700 custom prop ruined. it was an expensive day to be out fishin.

Did you call the company in the link above?

I did and they told me that they can do about a 2 day turn around.

If I still had my OMC 460 in my boat I would do that....well maybe not...I'd still replace it with all Mercruiser........But if you don't want to do that I don't see where waiting a week or so would be a big problem.

Re: HELP 460 omc king cobra engine coupler

yea i saw that too. they say two day turn around. so figure when i send it it'll take about four days to get there. then if they can get to it right away then its to days to re drill it. then another four days back. so say a total of ten days. if i sent it out tomarrow then i probably wouldn't get it back till next monday or tuesday. Right now the boats outside and torn apart. im the kinda person where if i get something like that apart id like to get it back together asap and seeing that the boat is up for sale i dont want any headaches with sending parts out. even tho it would be a much better idea to do so. id like to get a center console where iot fits my needs better. My villian sucks on gas and does more of a job pissing other fisherman off when i start it rather than having a good day out. GOTTA LOVE IT!

Do what ever makes you feel good. It's not for us to make the final decision, that's up to you ONLY.

Re: HELP 460 omc king cobra engine coupler

I had similar problem. I own a 1988 Reinell boat with OMC 460 King Cobra. In July of 2007 my coupler went out. This is when I found out what you have found out. Discontinued ouch! The boat repair shop research trying to find one for several days with no luck. They then came up with the option to use a coupler from a GM454 model. They had the flywheel machined to center the coupler and then ordered special bolts to hold the coupler on to the flywheel. The clearance was tight with the engine coupler cover but with the way they machined the coupler into the fly wheel it worked. It has been in operation for two years and seems to work well.
