I have a 71 merc 7.5. Tne motor starts and runs fine. On a 10 foot flat It sounds like its running on one cylinder. It has good fire on both cylinders. The carb has some issues, I'm expecting a rebuilt one in this week. Just wondering If anything else I should look for???

Re: Newbie with 7.5 problems

Why do you think its only running on one cylinder? Simple way to check it is to start it and then remove one of the plug wires. (use thick gloves or insulated pliers) If the motor doesn't change how it's running when you remove a wire, that is the dead cylinder. If the motor runs differently when you remove the wire, that cylinder is working. If the motor runs differently when you remove either of the wires, they are obviously both working.

Thanks for your response. I tried that and both cylinders are good. The new carb should be in by Thursday. I'll put it on and if problem still persists I'll post back. Thanks again for your help.
