My outboard starts up fine, with no problems every time I have taken it out on the water. when I shut the motor off and drift or anchor for a while, sometimes greater than an hour, it struggles to start up again. I have plenty of battery power, the engine turns over easily, but thats the problem it just turns over and over and over. You get the idea. It has happened the past few ties I have been out, and this past weekend it did it when I was about 20 miles off shore. Took a good 3 solid minutes of turning it over to get it finally going. The bulb is nice and full, so its getintg plenty of fuel. Once its running there are no issues at all.

Does anyone think this is a spark plug problem or perhaps pistons and rings expanding when the motor heats up? Im sort of stumped because it runs great all other times.

thanks in advance!

Sounds like spark plugs to me. replace or clean them before you go out the next time and see if it happens again. If it does then you have ruled that out.

Sounds like the oil scavange system isn't working. There are lines along the side of the engine that go into L shaped fittings. There is also one line that goes under the intake duct. These are the oil return lines and their job is to suck up unused oil and return it to the crankcase for burning.

You need to buy some Deep Creep from an auto or boat store and spray it into each of the fittings at the end of the hoses. Let is sit overnight and blow them out with air if possible. This will breakdown the carbon on the check valves and that should eliminate your starting problem.

This assumes that your choke is properly adjusted and your fuel primer ball is hard.

John

When you get done with that stuff, replace the fuel pump diaphram.
When it goes, it leaks fuel into the powerhead, and floods the engine, making it difficult to start.

Hi There,
Did this work, I am having a similar prob, turning over, fuel ball hard, no spark and no fuel in the cylinders...always works superbly and first time starter. Let us know.

Many thanks,

Pete4174,

You would be better served by starting a new thread and giving us the symptoms, engine health history, engine maintenance history and any steps tried in fixing the current symptoms.

Hi,

i seem to be having a similar problem..
couple of questions:

1) does the throttle need to be on neutral?
2) how do you know if enough gas is going into the engine?
3)how long should you warm it up after starting prior to engaging?

Pic of similar set up enclosed. Trophy

thanks!
