I'm attempting to change the impeller on my 1956 10 hp Johnson. I removed the access door, and removed the lower bolt on the driveshaft. I removed the 5 bolts reqrd to remove the lower end. It only drops down about 3/4", then won't go any further. I don't want to force it...am I doing something wrong? Thx in advance..

remove the spark plugs and jiggle the flywheel back and forth. i believe you mean the shift shaft bolt. did the shift shaft separate? it could be still holding.

No, it didn't separate...should I try and pry it apart?

Try removing the upper bolt and see if she drops down. Once you remove the bolt, shift it into forward gear. Best put a couple of the lower unit bolts loosely back in so it doesn't drop off.

That worked...
I need to do a search and see whats up with the copper water pipe coming out with the lower unit. Doesn't look like fun getting it back in. There's an O-ring up there that looks in good shape.

Was it not supposed to come out? My Clymer manual says to remove water line after dropping lower unit, so I assume it was doing that on purpose. Can't find anything on here about removing water line...maybe it goes back in first and then reconnects to pump housing as it goes back in...?

It is simple to install. Pull it out of the pump amd stick the upper end back in the upper grommet. Squirt some oil in the grommet first so it will slide in easy. The upper grommet is the same as the one in the pump housing.

By inserting it in the upper one first, you can see what you are doing as you reinstall the lower unit and have to hit the hole in the pump grommet.

The end connected to the pump housing seems to have some sort of rubber 'studs' holding it in place...do I just yank it out?

For those who may fore go replacing an impeller on a new-to-you-but-old motor...

I thought I was going to have to do a major tear down to find the part that broke off...but got lucky.

Not sure if it's apparent in this photo...seems to have rubber studs above the O-ring, in the pipe itself...

Those "studs" just hold the rubber busing in place. most likely the copper tube is stuck to the bushing. squirt some silicone or wd40 or so at the junction of the copper and the rubber and try to gently work it in with a tiny screwdriver by (again) gently inserting it between the the two to let the lube soak in. if all else fails yank it out and get a new bushing. (may come with impeller housing kit.) Any marine shop should have them laying around form previous jobs.

IMPORTANT: use SPLINE grease on the top splines of the vertical drive shaft. If not spline grease some good sticky corrosion inhibiting grease.

You got luck on the impeller. when one is broken like your or worse one MUST find ALL the pieces or they will work in to the block or other passages and cause overheating.

I'm hoping this motor is going to put me on some monster trout next week, so no time to order a bushing...:)

Steve, please go back and edit your last couple of post and resize your pictures. people see wide threads, and do not read them.

Holy Cow, Tasha D.....I'm just a dumb farmboy that finally figured out how to use Photobucket and post pictures. I would have no idea how to resize them.
I thought Photobucket did that for me?
