Hi everyone I have a 98 200hp Evinrude that wont shut down.
I just changed the ignition switch and still same problem. Turn key wont shut down, pull lanyard wont shut down. It also seems when you turn key off that one bank of cylinders are still running. I found a post regarding this issue with a 86 Johnson, but they keep mentioning a black/yellow wire, which I dont have! I have a yellow/red, blue, purple/white, purple, Red/purple, and purple/yellow, any help would be greatly appreciated

You have to have the black/yellow wire. It is in all modern harnesses.
It is definitely in the 1998 harness. It connects to the key switch at the "M" labelled terminal. You will see it at the engine behind the electrical cover in one of the large square connectors. (The large square connector with multi-colored wires in it.) From there it goes to the powerpack.
Your engine shuts down when that black/yellow wire is grounded.
By the way, you have to have a black wire also. I don't see that one in your list. Also you are not supposed to have a blue....You may not have a correct harness.....

Hi Daselbee thnx for your response, the wires that you mentioned are not there, When I changed the ignition switch this afternoon I carefully placed the wires from the original switch exactly the same way to the new switch.
Until today everything worked perfectly so the wiring is correct. The only thing I can think of is the wires change over somewhere in the harness.
Just another note I'm the original owner of this boat Javelin DC400 so I know that the wiring hasn't changed from the factory, honestly this is the first problem I've had with this boat. I'm maintenance crazy :)

Looking forward to your help thank you

Daselbee I did check the block connectors at the side of the block and there is a black/yellow there, so this leads me to believe that they change in the harness between the block connectors and the ignition switch, so what is the proceedure now to get this engine to shut down thanx again
Sorry one more thing the purple wires should really be called violet as Im told:eek:

Hi Doug thank you again for helping out, ok the violet/yellow is the kill and the blue is the Grd. I think the violet/white is the choke(centre pin) as for the others i thinkyellow/red is start solenoid , violet is acc/ignition and red/violet is power/battery............ so how do we proceed :D

Thank you

If you have them id'ed properly, wire them like the ignition switch wiring link I provided above. The second link.
Hopefully your switch is not different from the one used as an example in the link. I hope the contacts on the back are labelled.

Well, time for some heavy work with the meter. We will need to ohm out some of those wires with the meter.
For this discussion I am referring to battery negative post as GND. Easier to type.
OK, the wire you id'ed as GND, use the meter for continuity measuring between that wire, blue you said, and the batt neg post. You should get continuity. If not, blue is not GND.

Then, the wire you id'ed as the kill wire...you said violet/yellow... with switch off, check that the violet/yellow is has continuity to GND. With switch ON, it should be open to GND.

Next, you must check the continuity of that violet/yellow wire all the way back to the engine. Unplug the square connector where you found the OMC colored black/yellow wire, put one side of the meter in the harness side black/yel contact, put the other side of the meter, (using a long single jumper wire to run up front) on the key switch violet/yellow wire. You should have continuity.

If you have continuity, plug the harness connector back in, start the engine, and then unplug the harness connector with the engine still running. Using a suitable jumper wire, jump the black/yel wire in the engine harness side of the connector to GND.
This will kill the engine if the kill circuit is working in the powerpack.
Be careful, the black/yel wire will shock you if you get across it.
If it doesn't kill, or only three cyls kill, or any other weird thing like that, you have a complex problem.

Any of this making sense?
