Re: Any HVAC pros??

Ok,took the black wire off. I tried to plug the red wire to BM terminal to see if i had low speed fan....nothing.

Black and blue are still the same speed.
Bad fan motor after all?

Re: Any HVAC pros??

Gary sounds like a bad motor if its still in low speed regardless of what you do . The good news is it is a 48 frame motor so thats all you need to get is a new motor with matching capacitor . I would give these guys a call in the morning and see if they are open my local store is open saturday from 9 till noon.

Johnstone Supply - Charlotte #335
(Store# 335)

I would pull the old motor out in the morning just to see how many HP it is and if they will sell you one go get it it should be less than $100.00 for the motor and capacitor and thats all you need. 220 volt blower motor most likely 1/4 HP considering its only a 2 ton unit.

Thanks Rick! Will call them in the morning.
Its supposed to be near 90 here tomorrow..

I looked at online Carrier parts dealers and just the fan motor was over 500..
Add the cage and fan blade it was over 800 bucks! Unreal!

Appreciate all the help!

Re: Any HVAC pros??

Hate to say this but you are more than likely gonna need a new motor and capacitor. As Rick pointed out that red wire connected to the contacto is a NO-NO. Whenever that compressor contactor pulls in power L1 is being applied to 2 speeds at once. Probably did something funky to the motor windings and you are lucky the motor runs at all. unless for some reason it took out only the run capacitor(DOUBTFUL]. If I lived closer you be fixed up already.
Do you have a W.W.GRAINGER near you? or do you know anyone in a trade or business that deals with them, You would be able to get a motor and capacitor for far less. how about a local electrical motor rebuilder
that is used to dealing with walk in customers (non contractors),

Gary no problem at all yeah all you need is the blower motor and capacitor which are standard parts you can get at Johnstone . I will be around for a little while in the morning so if you call them and they give you any trouble ( some Johnstone's will sell to homeowners some wont ) pop on here and let me know in this thread then PM me your full name and I will call them and tell them my cousin needs a motor and get them to give it to you .

Re: Any HVAC pros??

you will find its at least a 1/3hp & more than likely a 1/2hp,,the board looks normal, the resitors do build heat so no need to worry, the boards normally have a park position for the xtra motor speeds to tie in so no loose wires, good luck,mike243

Re: Any HVAC pros??

Mike alot of the newer boards have park positions but this is an older unit and also a 2 ton so the motor at most is most likely a 1/4 -1/3 HP . I wouldnt put a 1/2 HP in anything smaller than a 2&1/2 Ton unit although it is one reason I mentioned to remove the motor and check HP since the manual for that unit only states the condensor fan HP. That way Gary would get the right motor for the unit.

Re: Any HVAC pros??

Gary good to hear your neighbor could hook you up with a motor his cost should be lower than what Johnstone would have sold it to you for ( he gets parts wholesale ) :D. Let me know if you run into any snags although I dont think you will the install is pretty straight forward.

Re: Any HVAC pros??

Thanks again Rick,

He dropped the motor off and in under an hour i have it finished...:D

This is great! I can actually hear the air flow!
Its very humid out with the temp near 90....Inside temp 68!

Its nice that it cycles off and on now.It used to just run all day and not cycle until late at night.
When i moved in here with the GF 5 years ago i thought it was just a worn out AC unit.I should have looked into it years ago...
I'm sure it will help the electric bill too...:)
