Starting fluid alternative

Because of its lack of lubricity, the use of starting fluid is strongly discouraged. Recommended is the use of fuel/oil mixture in a spray bottle. Finding a spray bottle compatible with fuel is a problem. The several plastic bottles I have tried leak all over the place and some collapse. Any suggestions on where to obtain a small fuel compatible spray bottle? Also, any comments on an aerosol jump starting fluid WITH LUBRICITY manufactured by CRC Industries, Part No. 05671? Might be a bit neater. I am trying to get this 1992 9.9HP Evinrude to start at the dock until after the Spring fishing season. Thank you.

I've always put some premix gas/oil in a discarded oil bottle and punched a small hole in the lid. Then you can squeeze the bottle and squirt just a little into a carburetor. Carry a 2nd lid to close off the bottle. ;)

that works, i also keep a section of hose, just dip into fuel tank, put finger over the end, like a straw, then put the hose in the carb and remove finger.

I have been using a plastic Coke bottle for a good long time. I save the plastic straw's from WD-40 can's, or what ever. Punch, or drill a small hole in the bottle cap, small enough to form a leak proof seal around the straw after you press the straw in.

Re: Starting fluid alternative

for a spray bottle you need a chemical resistant one...I bought one at home depot...around 3.45....it is gas proof as I use it for diesel or gas ...

Now for a starting fluid..I have used deep creep a few times....it did work...I used it on my ATV....

For those with zippo cigarette lighters, try the small can of naptha lighter fuel, add a touch of oil.

The local Evinrude dealer sells starting fluid with lubricant in it.
I agree though, you shouldn't need it.

Air silencer restricts access to carb. Removing air silencer cover to use these methods would allow for debris ingestion, I would think. I agree, the right thing to do is find and fix the problem but right now I would rather fish than work on engine. Carb has been rebuilt. Compression is 40psi/60psi. Decarb is next try. Condition of crank seals unknown. Runs/starts great after first start at dock making it hard to believe compression is the problem. Suggestions appreciated.

40psi??? Are you serious? No wonder it won't start. I'm surprised it even runs. Whatever is causing such low compression is only going to get much worse. You should stop running it and find out what is wrong with it.

Sea Foam is good, but not a miracle potion.

The mechanics at the town garage in the town where I live have started using pure silicone spray for the diesel engines. They explained to me that the problem with starting is not so much fuel supply but much more the build up of compression needed for the fuel or as they say fuel mix to ignite. Not just with diesel fuel but also with 2 stroke engines. They say that the silicone lubricates so well that it will help start even the the most stubborn engines.

Re: Starting fluid alternative

I keep my boat in a pole barn over the winter. Since there is no power brought to the building, I keep a gas powered generator by the boat. In the wintertime, the generator starts hard. Last winter, while having trouble starting it, I realized I had no starting fluid. I did however have a can of propane. After running a little propane in the carb it fired right up! I agree, in during the boating season, a properly tuned motor SHOULD start right up. We all know that sometimes old motors get cranky even if they've been well maintained. This idea might be worth a try.

Raw gas and oil sprayed into the intake of an outboard that's already not well is an invitation for disaster. I've heard of pretty impressive fires started that way. Better to find out why it won't start in the first place, fix the problem, and save your boat house.
