I have recently acquired a Johnston 3 engine which I have almost completely rejuvenated , but I am now stuck and really need help or the whole project goes down the drain. In order to finish the job I think that the only part that I still need to replace is the pair of magneto coils and spark plug leads. As I live in Scotland engine parts are a little hard to come by.
The engine has twin cylinders , two stroke.
The model number is JHRL-22C
Serial number is C529038
I have no idea of the year of manufacture but by and large it looks quite good.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: johnston 3 outboard

That is a 1967 Johnson, Highlander.

I will move this to the Johnson/Evinrude Forum.

These appear to be the standard coils used for many years...

They cost about $15.00 a piece, U.S. monies.

tallcar's offer sounds great. I just wonder why those things aren't available in Scotland. It isn't like you are in some remote part of the world. They are available everywhere here in US. Your motor is a 1967.

They are available in the UK. I'm sure some of the Brits will chime in and give you a link. I'd replace the coils, points, and condensers while you're under there. All are readily available, as they were used on many engine models for many years.

This is from Vic S. :
Try Wills Marine In Devon (Kingsbridge IIRC) www.willsmarine.co.uk Users of the YBW.com forums (THE boating forums in The UK) have found them very good for mail order spares

Other possibles are www.outboards-direct.co.uk (Oakley marine in Brighton)
and www.outboardservices.co.uk in Cornwall (Lostwithiel)

PPS should have asked on www.YBW.com I'd have replied to you yesterday if you had ! I always refer people here as well as this is THE forum in the whole world for outboard advice.

Re: johnston 3 outboard

Thank you all gents for your speedy replies to my problem. As you no doubt realise that I am completely new to this situation.I had contacted Willsmarine and it was they that directed me to this foum as they were unable to supply. I have just sent off enquiries to the other two sites as suggested by ensign so I will see what next week brings. Scotland has only a populaion of 5 million so it is understandable that such a specialist requirment is a bit more difficult to get hold of. Hopefully it will not be too long till the little engine is in use on Loch Lomond

As long as you can find what you need you can ship from North America to Scotland in a few days.
I have sent a few outboard parts across the "pond" on occasion for family and friends that had problems getting them there. Only problem is the weight of bigger items. Sending by sea is better for them but takes up to 6 weeks. Air freight for lighter items is a matter of a few days.

Wholesale Marine here in the US has Sierra replacements for the coils. I just changed mine on a 3hp Evinrude lightwin. Not a bad job but takes a flywheel puller.

Good luck!

Re: johnston 3 outboard

Hi I need some advice (again)
Having now got the engine running I found that it cut out due to the exit from the tank being completely blocked. I tried a couple of solvents. petrol, carburator cleanser and also compressed air. I am a little unsure of the anatomy of the tank in that, the tube within the exit does or does not have a gauze filter or if the sides of the tube have holes to allow the passage of fuel?
As the tank cannot be opened I am struggling to come up with a way to unblock this area which will have been in this condition for many a year

Re: johnston 3 outboard

Acetone may help along with a back flow of compressed air bursts (wear protective equipment). Least of your worries right now is a gauze filter in there. That if it is there is most likely your issue. If it is destroyed to get the tank flowing again then some form of replacement strainer can be made and fitted. Post a photo or two of your tank and issue if you can to give us all a better idea.

Re: johnston 3 outboard

thanks for the advice. I can`t post a photo as my outboard is stored elsewhere.. If it helps the tank is aproximately toroid shape surrounding the coils

Don't know if this will do you any good but some of the chainsaws I have worked on don't have a split tank and the filter and pickup tube can be a bear to get out. I take a wire with a hook in it and bring the p/u tube up to the fill hole, and replace the filter. In tank filters are pretty much used on all saws and weedeaters so it shouldn't be hard to find one.

Re: johnston 3 outboard

That motor has a sintered filter threaded into the tank. Merely unscrew it out. "Sintered" means it is made of thousands of tiny balls stuck together, and fuel flows between them. They are notorious for getting clogged up and are nearly impossible to clean well enough to work. You are supposed to just replace it.

However, what I do is use a propane torch to melt the sintered element out of the fitting and solder in a roll of brass filter screen (gauze as you call it, I guess).

Re: johnston 3 outboard

Many thanks
What I did last night was to run a drill through the internal gauze filter, the fuel now flows freely! All I have to do is to improvise a new filter element, and make sure the tank still flows when the fuel level lowers. Incidentally, I also repeatedly rinsed out the tank with petrol and I am still getting significant amounts of debris every time.

One more complication is that the fuel tap when now tightened into the underside of the tank does not line up with the cut out on the lower cover.

You'll have to make a gasket to go between the shut-off fitting and the tank. This will make it snug enough so that it does not leak when the fitting is rotated to the right position.

Will do. It has been an enjoyable experience bringing the motor back to life. My next project is a 1960 seagull 40
