In the picture it looked like the drive shaft bellow had a small hole in it too...
Could just be the picture but if i were pulling the drive i would replace it too.

Look at the drive shaft bellow directly above the end of the shift bellow..
Small split??

You are going to need a couple seals anyway to pull the drive.

The whole kits are not bad...that shift bellow could have been bought for 10 bucks..
look at these.

I would not go back to that marina ever again even if I was out of gas.
I understand some pofit needs to be made to keep the doors open but that was just plain robbery !

That bellows is $ 5-6 all day long, for $50-70 you can buy a kit that includes all gaskets a new shift cable and instructions.

I would recommend downloading the manual that Don put up in Mercruiser ? in Iboats. It's at the top of the forum as " ADULTS ONLY".

Not hard to change at all and you don't need anything else for that job. It is much easier to do with the outdrive off but not nessary.

I hope for $30 they gave you new clamps.

E-bay is also a great source for these parts. I bought a whole transom kit with seirra parts, all bellows, water hose and a gimble bearing for $100.00. been on there for 2 years with no problems. If you let it a boat CAN break you.

And the best tool you can have for this and other jobs on your boat is a service manual for the engine and outdrive. Without it you will spend a great deal of time here when all the answers are in the book -- which is a lot handier and faster and prevent screw ups that results in even more time spent here.

Re: water coming in- transom pic added

This pic is off the shaft bellow there was just a little water in it as you can see. Looks like the boat place i took it to did pull the out drive off and gerased every thing for winterization. But i would have thought they would have told me some water was in there and that the bellows were going bad.
So even with that little water in there that bellow needs replaced i take then?
The gimble bearing is in the middle back right? i spun it around in there and it move great. Not ruff at all spun very smoothly.

this pic is of the hole lower left of the shaft bellow. had almost no water in it. but there was a little that looked like condensat.

0510091158.jpg

this next pics are of the drive shaft. the u-joinnt moved freely no catching or grinding at all. the grease on the spline is dark but it is on there very heavy.
there is very little rust on the shaft at all. As you can see and it is very light.
But does that mean there is some thing else going on.

Did you look at the link i posted?

Call them and you can get the same kit without the gimbal bearing if your bearing is ok..
Save you about 30 to 40 bucks on the kit.

I bet that little bit of water was from the small nick i noticed in the pictures..
Looks like you caught it in time...;)

To my eyes I see excessive rust around the inner gimble bearing and rusty colored grease coming down from it. Did you feel any friction whatsoever when you stick a couple of fingers in it and turn it 360 degrees?

I agree....for the price of the kit and its already apart why not just put a new bearing in...
Good piece of mind is worth it...;)

Re: water coming in- transom more pics added

yeah i think i will just put a new gimbal in. might as well since i'm all ready there and got it torn down.

Whats got me is all the specialty tools you need to pull every thing apart.

1. Bearing removal and instullation tool
2. Bellows expander tool
3. slide hammer puller (i already own a 5lb and a 2 1/2lb)
4.Shift cable removal and instullation tool
5. hinge pin tool
6. sleeve removal tool
7. sleeve instullation tool

If i don't need to buy these tools that would be great. But i don't know what to use then. Like the hinge pin tool what did you guys use to take those out. Also the slever removal tool what did you guys use.

Consider them investments in your boating portfolio. If you stay in boating from now on, you'll use them from time to time, won't have to rent, or beg someone for them. If you find boating too expensive one day, you can always EBAY them.
People see others enjoying the water and say to themselves, that looks fun. Then they go buy the first boat they see, without investigating the history of the manufacturer or the boats background, just base their decision on impulse, then find out that boating isn't cheap. In fact, probably one of the most expensive hobbys there is. But at the same time, one of the most enjoyable hobbys, and creates lasting family memories. I'm 52 and some of my earliest memories are cruising on the river in my Dads lap letting me steer the boat. So keep this in mind as you are collecting the tools to maintain your investmest that it's part of it. You've got to more than put gas in and go.

I use the dealer for some parts but Ebasicpower has always been good to me.
Never got a bad part and the customer service is good.
Being i live in the same state regular ground shipping is next day delivery.
I had new manifolds and risers shipped a couple weeks ago...145 pounds and the shipping was 6.95...;)

when installing the gimbal bearing, make sure that the hole in the bearing lines up with the grease fitting opening in the houseing.

I think there is a substitute for the hinge pin tool, but I think you can get it fodr under $10. The shift cable nut tool -- if you can get it undone with needle nose pliers, then you don't need the tool, but if you can't then I don't know if there is a substitute for it.

As for the bellows expansion tool, I believe that is for the exhaust bellow, no tthe U-joint bellow.. so, that all depends on whether or not you want the exhaust bellow to attach to your outdrive side. Some do, some don't, but it's not necessary for it to attach.

Others can chime in and disagree with me on these, but I'm just throwing it out there.

You'll need bellows adhesive too.

ebasicpower is awesome. I've saved a lot of money by using them.. and they do ship really quickly.

I know some people are using the exaust tube set up and not messing with the bellows ever again. Might be something to look into.
