1996 Johnson 200 Oceanrunner - Oil Leak?

I bought a used motor with less than 200 hours on it, had compression checked and all 6 were OK. I ran it for a while the other day with a hose attachment and it ran great, good and smoky at first, but not too much. I noticed the day after that about a half cup of oil had drained out of the prop area. I took prop off and looked at the shaft, and I did not notice any damage. It sat in the same position another day or two and nothing else leaked out. The last Evinrude I owned, I had to have a rear main seal replaced after I saw a lot of oil come out of the prop exhaust. Do I need to be concerned?

Thanks in advance.

Jim

Jim, Sniff the oil. If it stinks it is gear oil and you have a bad seal, likely the propshaft seal. If it smells like gas or regular oil, it is normal.

Re: 1996 Johnson 200 Oceanrunner - Oil Leak?

I am a new boater looking at a 1992 Mako with an original 225 Johnson that is having the same issue. Compression is fine but a small amount of oil leaked out of the shaft after starting it up. I just found this post about the smell test which i will perform next time, but i would appreciate further details on why it would be normal for some oil to leak from the prop. Is it because it is a two stroke engine. Jim, did your leak turn out to be anything serious. Thanks.

Oil that smells of gas is just unburnt 2 stroke oil.
