Long time reader first time poster.

I have a 2000 , 35 horse johnson and love it.

Was out perch fishing on lake michigan, on the way back and the motor just stoped .

Locked up . Got it home, and a long story short I pined it to # 2 piston.

Took the cylinder head off and WOW..# 1,3 looked fine...But #2 had chunckes of metal in there and the piston looked like someone beat it with a hammer.. Cleaned it up and put everything back and it fired right up put soundes like a marble is bouncing around in there. Shut it down...What happened?

Question is , Take it in or try to trouble shoot and replace the piston myself.

Thanks for looking

Not just the piston that will need replacing. The cylinder wall is most likely in bad shape and the head as well. That is most likely a best case scenario. You will in my opinion need to remove the power head and rebuild from there. You also need to find out why it did this as well so it does not immediately happen again. Could be lack of lubrication that caused it or a ring just came apart on you. Big job but if you are mechanically inclined not overly difficult. You will need the services of a machine shop most likely as well.
How about getting a decent used motor to use in the meantime and then this job does not have to be a rush. Sell the other one when you are done or keep it in case you need it again.

Thanks for the reply.
I just took the cylinder head off agine and the cylinder wall is scratched pretty bad. I have the shop manual and looking it over for the line up.

Looks a little over my head.

Still cant fugure it out if its not getting enough oil in the gas to the cylinder. It could be running lean?

It could be:
a lean issue
a water flow issue
thermostat issue
oil issue
spark plug issue (type & gap)

What did the plugs look like when you pulled them?

Well talked to the boat guy and.......

Its junk,.to much money to replace looking about 2000$..Block scored bad from the ring breaking off and floting around while the piston was choping it up to metal flak. Looks like iam in the market for a new one..Just kills me its only 9 years old....Bought it of a guy that was getting a devoirce and need the money,he bought it brand new.

Looks like i am sitting on a motor for parts.

Anyone instred in it make me an offer.

Why not just look for a good used powerhead? SOlve your problems and be a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

A simple broken ring is not enough reason to declare it un-rebuildable. The block should be boreable and the crank and rods should be OK. I'd suggest getting a second opinion from someone who is used to rebuilding 2 stroke outboards.

Re: 35 johnson piston fryed

Thanks for all the positive feed back.

After looking at it with the shop manual its a little out of my expertiese.

Going to take it in to a few places around here in indiana to get some estimates on fixing it...That was just on mans opinion.

Just the walleye bight is going on now and i am out of the water.

Thanks and happy boating this year.

You need a few more opinions locally before you make a proper decision.
Good Luck.

It's not as intimidating as you might think, get a good machine shop to look at the cylinder, if it needs to go 20, 30 or even 40 over it's easy to find pistons. My personal opinion is if you are gonna bore one, bore them all. Standard around here is 60-80 bucks a hole (Canadian). Afterwards, you could likely get away with just new pistons, rings, gaskets and other standard rebuild fare, but I would probably do the bearings too. $2000 is pretty steep for such a small engine.

As for why it happened... My guess would be a lean mix on that cylinder, bad oiling, or it overheated (unless you did some other change right before that happened).
