70hp Johnson Leg differences?

I'm looking at a boat that I can get a great deal on, however, the guy piled up the gears in the lower unit, and actually made a nice viewing hole about the size of a quarter on the underside of the gear housing.

After doing some searching around, I have found a used one that appears to be in good shape, however the guy doesn't know much about boats at all and only knows that it came from an early 80's 70hp Johnson.

The motor on the boat I am looking at is an 85 according to the serial numbers. But the guy won't let me pull the lower unit off unless I'm buying the boat.

Other than the obvious measurements to confirm the gear housing and lower unit itself are the same size and bolt patterns, etc, is there anything else I should be concerned about as far as splines or shaft length before I take a gamble on them?

Re: 70hp Johnson Leg differences?

Thanks for the info, but I should have been more clear in my post. They are BOTH 70hp Johnsons. The one on the boat is a 1985 according to the serial numbers. The lower unit that I found is 'supposed' to be from an early 80's 70hp Johnson. but he has no numbers from it for reference.

My main concern is that if all the measurements are accurate between the two, is there anything else I should be concerned about as far as splines or anything that may make these two not interchangeable.

I recall someone once saying that there were certain years that the shafts went from a four spline to a multi spline?

Thank you very much for your help. I will check what I can and take a gamble. If worse comes to worse I'll just have to look for another lower unit.
