I'm looking at a boat that I can get a great deal on, however, the guy piled up the gears in the lower unit, and actually made a nice viewing hole about the size of a quarter on the underside of the gear housing.
After doing some searching around, I have found a used one that appears to be in good shape, however the guy doesn't know much about boats at all and only knows that it came from an early 80's 70hp Johnson.
The motor on the boat I am looking at is an 85 according to the serial numbers. But the guy won't let me pull the lower unit off unless I'm buying the boat.
Other than the obvious measurements to confirm the gear housing and lower unit itself are the same size and bolt patterns, etc, is there anything else I should be concerned about as far as splines or shaft length before I take a gamble on them?
