1964 LARK 40 HP replaced impeller

i replaced the impeller and it doesn't pump water out the top ,i hook a hose to the lines going up the leg and the water doesn't come out the exhaust relief i let it run for awile and only just a little mist came out can you tell me what i did wrong before i change it a little water came out wile it was running

Thermostat - it is in the top of the powerhead. Remove the housing held on by 3 bolts - it's inside.
