i haveing troubles putting the out drive back on. Not going to beable to get the parts i need for a couple of weeks so i just want to but it back together so i don't lose any parts.

I have the shaft slide back through the gimbal. But i don't know if the splines are lineing up. I get it most of the way back. but then it just stops. the bolts are about 1/2 from the out drive holes.

Is it just trial and error on turning the shaft a little bit at a time and then trying to slide it back in. The manuel just says slide it back in.

turn shaft a little bit until it starts to slide in BUT check to make sure the shift shaft still lines up before you put it the whole way on.

Re: cann't get outdrive back on

Mine took some pursuasion with a 3lb sledge (on a pice of scrap 2x4 wood) to get it all the way on the studs. Then again, mine is a 30+yr old boat which has likely only had the outdrive off 2 or 3 times at best. :) As long as the throttle is in fwd gear, and the outdrive is in forward gear, it should go on. You can get underneathe the unit and look to make sure the shift shafts are lined up.

When mine gets to that point, I put my left shoulder against the drive and reach down with my right hand and pull up on the prop, rotating it counterclockwise. If the alignment is ok, you should feel it slip in...then you might have to tap it in a little from there.

You may have to lift, & shove a bit when you're at that point, make sure your controls are in forward, (and your upper shift shaft track can slip over the lower shift shaft arm)

Did you check your alignment with an alignment tool?

Come on fellas, beating a drive on???
If you can`t literally push it on to within a 1/8th inch there`s a problem.
If you had great difficulty removing one, there`s a problem.
When you remove the 6 nuts it should almost fall out if it was serviced PROPERLY

If you are just waiting on the transom service kit why are you installing the drive?
No new seals or anything...i hope you were not planning on using it while waiting for parts...
It should not have to be beaten on either.....Take Boat Doc's advice!

Back the trailer/boat and outdrive into a tree. Works everytime for me.

But seriously, I do a light Chuck Norris Love tap with my foot and it pops in. Like everyone one said... check your alignment and shifting tabs... and make sure throttle is forward, or you can figure it out after a few choice words like me.

The manuel just says slide it back in.

That what you should be doing. It should go in as easily as it came off...

What is it? Merc, Kobra?

You should not have to force it any more than giving it a couple of nudges, if so something is not right....first check the alignment with the right tool, and that also helps get the gimble bearing lined up right. My first time took a while, the last time took about 10 min.....
