I have noticed a large number of boats from the Houston, Galveston Texas area. That are for sale. A few state they were damaged in the storm. My big question is whould you take or make the leap of faith to buy a huricane boat?

Some hurricane damage is pretty minor. Chips/gouges but wasn't sunk or cracked in half. I'd at least keep an eye out for good deals, then go inspect.

Actually cracked in half is fine too, provided I knew what I was getting. I'd happily buy the rear half of a 30 foot boat with nice engines and mechanicals for a small price... it's all about what value you get vs. what you pay :)

Now, if you're talking about a sunken fiberglass boat in saltwater, I'd probably never do that... most of the value left is in the scrap metal, and I wouldn't try to repair one.

if you buy a "cane" boat.....you are buying a project.......if you want a project.....then yes

if you are just buying parts....yes.

if you think you are going to drop it in the water and go fishing......forget it

Isnt really just a question of checking out ANY used boat?

Seen some boats that only LOOKED like they went through a 'cane..
But were just reaaaaaly bad patch jobs and neglected boats.

I guess there aren't any bad boats, just bad boat owners! lol

DITTO,
Remember, in the market it buyer beware. No matter what you are told about a used boat the assumption has to made that at very least it is going to need a complete inspection. I do not mean a surveyor's report, I mean a complete inspection. If it is in good shape, (meaning short distance from seaworthy) you are likely not going to get a good deal. If it is sunk, then you might as well plan on a complete refit. Either way it is a gamble. Research is key and get a survey anyway. That will get an inspection started at very least.

Same thing here.
I'd be more apt to go looking at them as parts than as my next boat.
Although I've seen and bought several "damaged" boats up here that needed little more than some new rub rail or some good cleaning.
I've seen others though that were well battered and structurally damaged. Pay very close attention to any impact or rub areas on a glass boat. What doesn't look bad can be quite ugly underneath.

I bought an older Mako center console last year for its motors after it was totaled for storm damage. I had every intention of just scrapping the hull after pulling the two late model engines. The hull which looked to be pretty sound, being missing only some rub rail, two cleats, and a damaged bow rail, had major crush damage on the port side. I deemed it not worth my trouble to fix, but a buddy took on the project after I took what I wanted from the boat. To me, it was too far gone, and because of it's age, not worth the repair. It was hit so hard that the floor was separated from the gunwales and the rear corners of the hull were rubbed completely through down to the water line. It would take major work to make it sound again.
I no doubt got my money's worth in the two near new Optimax motors, console, electronics, and T top. Giving it away, to me, saved me the cost of taking it to the dump.

Re: Would you buy a hurricane damaged boat?

I would only buy one for the reasons oops mentioned.
When I bought my boat I drove far away from Houston to not end up with an "Ike" boat.
After hurricane Ike there was so many boats in random places with no trailers (ditches, front lawns, back yards, middle of the streets etc). Many of these boats were upside down or completely filled with water where the owners had left the plugs in. I actually saw many people drying engines by taking off the heads off as much as two weeks later. Most of these people did not have any insurance and were asking normal prices for them when they were trying to rid themselves of these junk boats. If you called to inquire about the boat most would lie and tell you their boat was in storage that stayed dry during the storm. Many buyers were hosed because they were naive.
Other boats floated off to sea to return 3 weeks later and be auctioned for pennies on the dollar.

Hurricane or neglect. Same difference.

Old fellow told me once, "Once you stop loving a boat, it shows."

Just do it.
