I've read a few posts on this topic but am worried about the rewind spring. Can anyone tell me how to unwind the spring before I remove the pin and then the easiest way to wind it back up? Is this a job I can handle without much knowledge of these outboard motors?

Micro ,it might be that no one knows the answer to your question, not ignoring you. I don't know the answer to your question ,but wanted to let you know your not being brushed off.I'm sure if you give it enough time ,some one here will give you an answer, possibly FRANK A.

No, I know Frank...I'm sorry for the wise crack I was only trying to be funny. I realize the motor is pretty old but it's all I have and if I want to go fishin' on Memorial weekend I need to repair it. I can't afford to pay someone to do it so I came here....anyways thanks for the response Frank it means a lot.

Howdy, smallie.

It is not clear from your post exactly what you are trying to do. A more thorough explanation should get you some responses.

hey JB...I'm replacing the gear that engages the flywheel when you pull on the starter rope.(I've heard people call it the pinion gear or starter drive gear or even the bendex gear?) It's on a 15hp 1981 SeaKing made by Chrysler sold by Wards. The Model# is VWB 52119b and Serial #18x23198. My problem is I read a post on here about the spring inside that winds the rope back up needing to be unwound before I try to replace that gear and then wound back up again once the gear is back on. I'm wondering how do I go about unwinding the spring and then winding it back up. It may be a dumb question but it's all new to me.

Your question now makes sense, smallie. Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you.

Not really a dumb question at all, but like a lot of questions we get here, one that a Service Manual can probably answer.. .illustrated.
