New Guy- 3.0L Mercarb flooding issue

This is my first post, but I've been lurking for a while and reading mercarb/3.0l posts looking for the answers...

After lots of reading and nothing solid, I thought I would ask for help rather then try to self-help:

Boat- '97 Bayliner Capri w/3.0 & the dreaded mercarb

Issue- cold starts and runs ok for a under a minute, then begins to flood itself. Smooths out at higher RPM (2500+), but pulling the throttle back and letting it settle results in light black smoke and 'chugging' and eventually a stall unless throttle is feathered back to higher rpms. Boat will then NOT start until cooled or started on starting fluid.

When it stalls, you can visibly watch it flood (dump fuel into the carb) with the flame arrester off.

What I did:

Step 1 (before I knew it was flooding)- replaced/serviced all filters, checked fuel pump operation, engine has new plugs & wires (as part of yearly maint.), gas is mostly new with stabil treatment. Issue remained.

Step 2- pulled top half off of carb, checked float for holes (none- plastic foat), checked needle operation- float needle seemed to stick occasionally. I sprayed the needle and seat (and the rest of the carb) with carb cleaner. Everything seemed to work fine non-running. Re-assembled and got the same result (flooding) when running. I am now at a loss... and at the end of my rope.

I would greatly appreciate anyone and everyone's thoughts! I'd like to think that I am missing something simple or I am overlooking a step.

My next step (3) is to go buy a Rochester carb and move on... Somebody stop me!

Thanks in advance!

Remove the entire carb, and rebuild it with a 15 dollar rebuild kit. Carb cleaner in a can, and compressed air.Or take it to a pro and let him rebuild it.One other thing the fuel pump should be tested, that it is giving you between 4-6 psi no more.

If you do decide to replace the Mercruiser carb with a Rochester, make sure the intake manifold is compatible. I know that the Rochester carb that was used in the 1989 era had a very slight difference in the footprint.

This is a great forum with boat loads of knowledge. Listening to these guys can save you a boat load of cash!

Welcome aboard!

Kovah55- What comes in the rebuild? Gaskets only? or does it include a new float and etc?

89Winner-
I think mine is new enough to avoid the difference. Where did you source a weber carb conversion?? I like the way that sounds (I'm a VW guy).

Thanks!

Comes with a new needle, ball and gaskets, o rings. For 15 bucks you don't want to try and rebuild the old one? Go on e-bay and buy a new carb 265.

Re: New Guy- 3.0L Mercarb flooding issue

i just rebuilt mine, and the kit from the dealership was $30 and it had nothing in it for the float or needle. my boat is doing the exact same thing and i am getting ready to replace the float. a couple of people on here told me that the old plastic float will sometimes gain fuel and you cant tell when you ake it apart, but it will get heavy and not stop the flow of fuel resulting in the flooding. how hard was it to take the bowl apart and put back together, i am thinking about doing mine myself, i am very mechanicaly inclined, just alittle nervious, i have never taking one of these apart.

I'm willing to try it- I'm willing to try anything really.

I think you may be reading my posts wrong, its hard to inflect tone on the written word... I just don't want to spend another Sunday in the driveway, I'd rather be on the lake. My post here is to get a bunch of ideas so I can make the best decision. At this point, I'm willing to spend $40 on a rebuild kit and get it done- this is probably what I'll do.

Where can i source a good rebuild kit? I know west marine has sierra kits for like $30 (and they are a mile away).

With an idea of how it already worked and came apart, it was not hard at all. Search on here for the factory service manual for your engine- I used this one:
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/13/13B5R2.PDF (note that if you click on the little 'house' it will take you to the main menu for the whole manual).

Just exactly where are you getting a complete rebuild kit for 15 bucks?. The dollar store! the cheapest best quality universal kit (by Weber)and is $39.95 @aftermarketmarine.com+s/h.
