Volvo Shaft Removal

Maybe a stupid question, but hopefully Don S. can provide me with an answer...

I'm in the middle of a transom/floor rebuild. I pulled out my Volvo AQ131D last night and want to attach it to an engine stand and roll it in my garage until the restore is done. I popped off the bell housing without a problem, but I can't seem how to get the intermediate shaft disconnected from the flywheel.

With that shaft I'm unable to get the damned thing on the engine stand.

Please help!

It sounds as though the shaft is jammed or rusted into the vibration damper (absorber). There should be 6 bolts holding the vibration damper to the flywheel - just remove the damper so you can use penetrating oil or more force to remove the shaft.

The damper is loose.. But, with the 6 bolts removed from the flywheel, it only moves out about an inch (to the end of the primary shaft's spline) then it stops. I've used PB blaster and a rubber mallet and can't get it to budge further.

It's supposed to rain today, and I'd like to get the motor in the garage before it does.

Sounds like the shaft is rusted to the bearing in the end of the crankshaft. Should be able to rock it back and forth until it pops out. The bearing is held in place by a snap ring so will be difficult to remove without beating up the surfaces.

You'll get it eventually - I tend to get creative and invent new cuss words - sometines that helps :D

Lack of lubricant and the aggravation will be a good thing to remember when reassembling components.

Yep.. That was the issue. The bearing was trashed at the end of the crankshaft. I beat the shaft silly with a rubber mallet and it popped right out - along with some pieces of bearing. Now I've gotta order another one. Any ideas where to find it?

Engine is nice and cozy on an engine stand in my garage btw! One step closer to getting her on the lake this year!!

Re: Volvo Shaft Removal

Glad to hear you got it out.

iboats is a parts store. Look at the top of the page under the logo and you can get started finding complete diagrams and parts lists and prices right here. There are certainly other sources but I've found this site reasonable plus the option of aftermarket parts in some cases is good to have.

BTW - I think it took two weeks for me to realize this forum was sponsored by iboats and that they were a Volvo distributor
