ok please excuse the lack of terminology, my 1970 60 hp motor wont shift into gear, it did yesterday. All I have changed is the throttle cable and switched the gear oil out ( yes I used the C ), also now when the key is turned to the on position I have a really high pitch squeal coming from what I believe is the starter solenoid( has the big hot wire from battery coming to it, it also has a connector with a red and a red and purple wire coming from it going to the power distribution block with an inline fuse and the other part of it going into the boat. I have toggle switches instead of the push button, i started the engine and disconnected the wires going to the lower unit checked the voltage out from the wires coming from the switches got wild readings ranging from .01 to 20 never evened out, and to top it off no one in town will work on the hydro-electrics. the solenoid ( i think thats what it is) has 12.5 volts but the switches and the wires coming from them have the random readings, is my next step to jump a wire from the battery itself to the blue or green wire going into the lower unit? and why would the solenoid squeal? it starts up fine but its in forward. any help is appreciated as this boat was my wifes mothers day gift and we haven't been able to get on the water yet.

also when i take the connector with the red wire and the red and purple wire off the solenoid post ( same one as the main battery is on) the whining stops but the boat wont start?

anyone? I cant find anyone who will work on this thing. what controls the voltage to the wires that go to the lower end? I am not getting twelve volts there, am getting 12 at the solenoid but rreal weird jumpy readings at the switches and wires to the lower end

alright I found a wiring diagram and found that the power wire to the control box was unhooked , hooked it back up and have all three gears:) now just the solenoid issue it has a real high pitch buzz or squeal, I took the red and purple wire that feeds the ignition switch off and it quit squealing , but no power to that means no start:confused: anyone heard of a solenoid going bad but still starting the boat?

Its all better now still a little squeal but i found a place that works on these engines and they showed me that it was the ignition box and assured me its normal. I also found a set of controls for my engine in fantastic shape for $20 so next week no more toggles:D

Hey,
I have the same type motor and my engine control buttons needed to be replaced also. Up til now I have used toggles like you are saying. Where did you find those controls because I would love to buy some. Also, my motor runs great but the other day it cut out... I don't believe its sending electricity to the spark plugs anymore. I think I have to replace the ignition points and maybe the rotor... do you have any suggestions... ever had that problem??

If your motor remained in neutral with the engine running, there is more going on than wires that weren't hooked up. The hydro-electric shift OMC outboards were designed to default to forward gear, absent an electrical signal directing the solenoid(s) to move to either neutral or reverse.
