ok please excuse the lack of terminology, my 1970 60 hp motor wont shift into gear, it did yesterday. All I have changed is the throttle cable and switched the gear oil out ( yes I used the C ), also now when the key is turned to the on position I have a really high pitch squeal coming from what I believe is the starter solenoid( has the big hot wire from battery coming to it, it also has a connector with a red and a red and purple wire coming from it going to the power distribution block with an inline fuse and the other part of it going into the boat. I have toggle switches instead of the push button, i started the engine and disconnected the wires going to the lower unit checked the voltage out from the wires coming from the switches got wild readings ranging from .01 to 20 never evened out, and to top it off no one in town will work on the hydro-electrics. the solenoid ( i think thats what it is) has 12.5 volts but the switches and the wires coming from them have the random readings, is my next step to jump a wire from the battery itself to the blue or green wire going into the lower unit? and why would the solenoid squeal? it starts up fine but its in forward. any help is appreciated as this boat was my wifes mothers day gift and we haven't been able to get on the water yet.
also when i take the connector with the red wire and the red and purple wire off the solenoid post ( same one as the main battery is on) the whining stops but the boat wont start?
