I've got probably an 80's 15 hp gamefisher which i just installed a new water pump on. I have a parts motor for it, so I figured while i was at it, i'd pull the gearcase apart and make sure the gears and everything were good since I basically have a new set for the motor. It's the kind of unit where the berring carrier needs to be pulled out which pulls most of it out except for the pinion gear and another gear which I believe works as forward. Everything checked out alright, so I put the berring carrier back into the unit. Now it's like it's in forward all the time. It won't go into neutral even. I've tried to reinstall it several times. What could I be doing wrong? My only guess is that I'm not aligning the shifter rod linkage to the gear shifter. Any one have an idea?

Without the model number there is no way to know who built your motor.
Are you working with a manual?Sometimes you can find manuals at the library.

It turned out to be a shift linkage problem. The linkage connection bolt wasn't tight so when I would shift in forward it would slip. Same with reverse, and that's why It would either freeze in forward, or neutral and wouldn't shift out of it. I adjusted it, and tightened it, and it works fine now.

Beek14,
Iwas wondering if you happened to have a coil pack from one of those 15 hp motors available? Thanks

I do, but I cannot guarantee it working.. It is untested.
