I have an issue with my 1996 evinrude 225 V6.

The engine starts up but i notice it's rough. Intermitingly it dies then starts right up the rps are at about 1100 at start up then drop down to 900 after quickstart clears. Then engine runs and will turn off intermitingly, It will has an ocasional cough or head shake. I have checked all the plugs they seem o.k except four the secong one on the portside (not sure if this is cylinder 4 or 5). I notice its fouled up. I have spark on this cylinder moved aroung coils and plugs this one consistently gets fouled. All the carb jets are at 2 3/4 turns.

How can i determine if this is a timming issue or carb issue or recirc valves?

I have redone the carbs, changed power pack (output 150) & flywheel.

I also notice when I move the screw for the idle and not much change of rpm's when the idle base moves.

This eradic issue has me going crazy and concerned can the motor blow up because of this? I'm even scarred to test it out because i dont know if i have a lean condition or timming issue causing an engine malfunction.

Thank you, ahead of time...

I'd run a compression check on it. Welcome to the club though. This issue seems to be very common among evinrude motors in that time frame. Did you replace the trigger (optical eye) when you got the new powerpack? Compression check would be where i'd start though.

Compression check on all cylinders is the first step. They all should read about the same. If not, time to pull the heads and find out what is gone wrong.
You mention 'I have redone the carbs'. What did you do exactly? If you overhauled them, did you remove all the jets and clean them with a toothpick or some other no metallic cleaner. Were all passages blown out and all plugs in drillings checked for leaks? Spray cleaning a carb usually does not fix anything but the outward appearance.

yes I also replaced the trigger coil & the power pack thats how i got it to spark.

Compression it fine its even on the 90's mark...

Reone carbs means 6 new carb kits completly disasemble clean with solvent and air. Check floats etc...

I know it's a bit of trouble, but can you swap the position of the carbs, to see if the problem follows the carb?

i thought of that but its a mission. That test would befinatly tell me if its the carb. great thinking.

Will try that tomorrow id possible.

Thanks,

Mike
