counter clock wize engines are uasually used on dual motor setups.

check your prop rotation.....

but i suspect a bad starter......replace it with a genuine MARINE starter.

(no you CANNOT use a car starter)

cheers

Ayuh,... Ya got that Backwards Oops,... My avatar is Standard rotation...
Standard rotation motors are Counter-clockwise/ Lefthanded rotation,....
As viewed from the Working end of the motor,... Not the pulley end...

Clockwise motors haven't been used in boats for Years,... Even with Twins...
It's done in the drivelines nowadays...

Dennis,... What did the flywheel teeth look like,..??
I'd suspect the wrong starter,..?? mismounted starter,..?? Bad flywheel teeth,..??
The Slow cranking could be Bad starter wiring,..??
Is the motor dragging, hard to turnover, binding,..??

check if coolent is commin out your weep hole, also on your exhaust theres a plate that keeps coolent from going out the exhaust, that could be missing is coolent in the bottom of your boat. check the adult only section your motor and drive manuel will be in there. good luck

Re: mercruiser 470 starter turning over slow

The closed coolent system is for the most part the same as a car, the differance is that instead of a radiator and the coolent being cilled by air passing through the radiator, the coolent goes in to a heat exchanger ( the cylinder to the right of the engine about 4 inches round and 24 inches long) Inside that cylinder you will see what lookes like a steel plate filled with holes. Each hole is a tube that water runs through. The coolent, when the engine is running, passes through the large cylinder and around the inner tubes, the heat is then transfered from the coolent to the water and the water is put back into the lake via the exust.

Now if you fill the coolent reservor tank and the coolent drains some ware you need to find out were it is going. Now on top of your exsust manifold is a coolent tank also much like an auto radiator, remove the cap, is there coolent in there, and is it clean. If it is full and clean chances are that you are loosing the fluid through an over flow tube some ware, follow all the hoses to try find were it drains. If there is no coolent when you remove the cap on top of the manifold then the answer is that you r really low on coolent and its drianing into the entire coolent system.

I run the same engine year and all, and when i open that cap on the manifold and its full and the engine is cool there isnt any coolent in the reservor. I have never had any over heating issues.

Good luck and let us now what you find!

Re: mercruiser 470 starter turning over slow

I also am working on a 470 and my prestolite starter doesn't seem to turn the engine over quite fast enough. Took it apart and there's tons of rust inside. Anyone have an opinion on whether it's better to get it rebuilt by a starter shop for ~$100 or spend around $225 for a new one? Anyone have a starter in good condition that they'd like to sell?

Also- here's what we've done w/ the engine so far:

1) Replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor (has electronic ignition and alternator conversion already)
2) Set timing
3) Rebuilt Rochester carb

The engine "coughs" but doesn't start so we're assuming that it simply is not cranking hard enough. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

If I remember correctly those engines had some kind of funky valve adjustment procedure?
I almost bought a 24' Searay Cuddy years ago with twin 470's in it, you could eat off the engines it was so clean! I researched those engines closely back then, and didn't like what I heard from a mechanic that specialized in them, I went with the same type boat with a V8 350/260hp Mercruiser instead, being the motorhead I am.

I have a 1977 470, and have had the exact same issues. My starter (according to web-research), belongs on a MACK TRUCK, not a mercruiser. So i assumed THAT was why it was so slow. As for it failing to start: do you have spark? New distributor cap, condensor, and points.

This thread is 4 years old. Start a new one with a fresh title and post your problem. I would expect many more views and replies.
