Engine Compartment black

First time on the site. I just bought a 1976 Starcraft American 18 with a 165 mercruiser in it. The entire inside of the engine compartment is blak. A buddy of mine said that it is because at some point the engine must have been spewing oil inside it and the oil has soaked right into the glass. So my questions are:

1. Is this possible and is this dangerous or unsafe if I run the motor when the compartment has been stained or soaked with oil?

2. Do I have to remove the engine and the blackened glass etc. and reglass/rebuild the engine compartment?

Thanks

Ayuh,... There's Nothing inherently Unsafe about a Nasty oil soaked motor box....
A Good Scrubbing,+ hose out with Pine-sol or something would probably spruce things up abit,....
Maybe a trip to a Carwash to powerwash it out...

Re: Engine Compartment black

I have a 78 and the engin e compartment is black but not oil soaked thankfully, tho I can smell some oil a faint smell of oil once she's good'en warmed up.

It would not surprise me to see a engine compartment filmed with oil with this crappy old Chevy 6 cylinder, Dad had a 68 Chevy truck with this engine and it used a quart of oil every 50 miles.
Post some pictures sometime if ya could I wouldnt mind seeing it, heres my 78 American 18 with a 165.

Re: Engine Compartment black

I will post some photos. Funny thing is your boat seems to be the exact same as mine including the lovely orange colour. Mind you yours is in far better condition as the interior of mine has not been taken care of and has suffered significant damage. Thanks for everybodys help on the engine compartment.
