i dont know about the best, but i did mine with satin finish white. it covers blemishes really good and is easy to touch up. did it with a compressed air sprayer.

Rustoleum is a good, cheap, durable paint. You can reduce it and spray it or roll-brush it on. Make sure you get rid of any surface rust prior to painting or it will get nasty. You can prime it with a rust eating primer too.

I'm with rustoleum or equivalent. Get rid of all the loose and flaky bits and slap it on.

Depends on what you mean by "best". Cheapest is Rustoleum or equivalent. "Best" as far as durability, protection, and shine would be any of the two-part automotive urethanes or polyurethanes (Imron, etc). Rustoleum will cost you $10, automotive stuff will cost you $200-$300 plus you need the equipment to spray it.

rustoleum dulls after about six months to a year of exposure, more expensive auto is the best to retain a gloss finish.. rustoleum is the cheapest, it will work and is easy to apply and easy to touch up.

And the satin finish rustoleum looks good for a couple of years, even more if you actually take care of it...

I pretty much use Rustoleum on stuff like boat trailers. I figure that by the time the paint gets dull, I'll be repainting anyhow, assuming I even have that boat and trailer any longer.

It's a good, durable, reasonably-priced paint. I know, though, that some folks are very concerned with appearances. For them, I suppose the automotive paint route is the only one that will make them happy. I'm just not all that concerned.

No matter what top coat you decide to use, all the work will be in getting it ready to be primed. You may be having to use a scaler, sander and emery cloth to get in some nooks and crannies. Using a primer like POR will help as well. Just take some time, disassemble the trailer as far as you can and go from there.
You may want to read redone 4x4 thread that he posted a few months ago, it was a good look at what is necessary to properly paint a trailer. Good luck! :)

Personally the trailer just has to be functional. Prettiness is secondary. Slap the rustoleum on and have done with it !!!

This is probably not the best advice for someone who might paint over a big mistake. Covering up or not repairing a rusty, failing trailer could cause a lot of headaches on the road.

I just purchased two quarts of Pettit EasyPoxy topside paint, there will be enough left over from one of the colors to paint my trailer with. Will this paint work or should I just go with rustoleum? Of course I will prime first.

That is what I am doing with my boat/trailer.
Then things match.
If the paint is good enough for the boat that will be in water it is plenty good enough for the trailer that only gets dipped.

My exact thoughts too, thanks for sharing.
