Having difficulties finding a serial, and or model number.

Hey all, I have searched the threads and am still stumped. I'm not sure if the previous owner mismatched parts or if I'm just mistaken, but in looking at the numbers on my motor, this is what I have come up with..... First off the outside of the fiberglass cover shows it being a Johnson 25hp

The tag underneath the carburetor reads 4 2699 above 15 H O
The numbers on the starboard side transom mount are 12101 above 188057
The numbers I found on the freeze plug read R8544940

If someone could help me find out the year/model of my motor I would greatly appreciate it..... Also I believe this is a long shaft motor if that helps.
Thanks in advance,.. Bobby

Find the model number with the letter J or E in it.

Re: Having difficulties finding a serial, and or model number.

Hi Jones.... The plate that contains the serial/model #'s that is supposed to be on the starboard side in between the exhaust and the swivel is missing. The previous owner told me he was pressure washing it, and it came off.... Sounds kinda fishy to me,... anyhow.. I think I have looked over every inch of this motor at least three times, if not more.. I know what the serial number should look like, but I am still not finding it.... Shouldn't that number on the freeze plug at least translate into a model number?... I am stumped.. I kept looking online last night trying to find a site that would maybe have a catalog of pictures for each year Johnson hoping maybe I might match it up that way. If there is anywhere else I can look please let me know.. I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi,

I thought I would try and help you as well.

Try to look on the top of the motor for a round plate that is the size of a quarter or so. It will have a number that you can cross reference for your model. Not there? (when I say top of motor I mean the very top of it ( looking down on the motor) should start with a J and possible an E.

Then this is what I did to narrow it down, at least.

Start pulling numbers......

Off the intake, head, carb, starter, any 6 digit number that you can find imprinted on the casting is a good place to start. By looking these numbers up one can narrow the model year/model #. I hope this helps. I used the starter # on mine as a starting point, but I wrote down like 5 different 6 character number strings and tried to catalog, somewhat. For example I would write down:

Cylinder Head - #xxxxxxx
Starter #xxxxxxx
Ignition Coil #xxxxxx

so on and so forth. I have found that the 6 character number strings seem to be the easiest to cross reference.

When you get some numbers then just get on google (or yahoo) and type in like Johnson xxxxxxx or Johnson starter xxxxxxx and see what comes up :) Read the pages and check out what models the starter (or other piece) is for. Write down the model #'s and then go by process of elimination :)

Good luck :)

Re: Having difficulties finding a serial, and or model number.

You have already found the mysterious round plug. Problem is, the "R" stamped before the number means Replacement Powerhead. So, it is of no use to you.

If the number plate is missing from the port stern bracket, then you are SOL. Best bet is to post a picture of it. We can at least narrow it down to within a few years.

That serial number after the R makes me suspect it is from around 1990-ish. That sound reasonable?

I'd say it is consistent with the 1990-ish theory. Anybody recognize the decals??

the decal scheme is similar to my 1994, i'd say early 90's.

The other poster had a good idea, get any parts number from the engine, for example the power pack number and google that number.

Websites that sell outboard parts list the parts by serial number and it should show up in google.

If it's early 90's, the same platform was used for 20, 25, and 30 hp models. If the powerhead's been replaced, who knows. It's also pretty common for people to swap carburetors on that series to try to boost horsepower.

Re: Having difficulties finding a serial, and or model number.

Ok all... I have managed to pull 15 different 6 digit part numbers off of this motor.. I have been googling them for the past uh..... 6 or seven hours now (sigh)... I dont seem to be any closer than when I started. :( Here is the list of codes that I was actually able to find the parts online... The codes not mentioned I was unable to find out what they were.. I sure hope this helps.. Im sure all of this could have been avoided if the previous owner didnt pressure clean the decals off the hood, and the ID plate off the motor .. sheesh.. anyhow.. I really appreciate everyones help. These are the codes and their parts.. Thx again.....

Trouble is that all of those parts are the same on the 20, 25, and 30 hp versions, so it won't really help you determine the horsepower.

I hear ya CAT.. lol... Im not so much worried about what size it is.. pretty sure its a 25, but... the main reason Im doing this is because I need the serial # to register it, and I also need to know the year to make sure I use the correct fuel mix.

You already gave us the serial number in your first posting. You got that off the round plug, right? Since the other one got "washed away", that is the only one you are going to find.

As for the fuel mix, that is a no-brainer. Anything since 1964 is 50:1, and it certainly isn't anywhere near that old.

Nothing mysterious about the freeze plug.. I had like you said "already found" it on the starboard side of the motor and I was curious as to why I was being asked to look for a round plate on, and I quote, "the very top of it ( looking down on the motor)." .. Also it's not like I can turn in a serial number to DMV for a "replacement powerhead" that as you said "is of no use" to me. The reason I had a concern about the fuel mix, is because I had recently seen a couple pictures of a mid to late 80's Evinrude motor with a 100/1 fuel mix ratio sticker above the fuel plug. Just making sure I don't mess something up on my motor, and hey... a guys gotta learn somewhere... better off learning in here than out on the water. Thanks to all for your help... Till next time ;o)
