Jon Boat Restoration

Every 40 year old woman needs a fishing boat so I recently purchased a very used aluminum jon boat and am trying to fix it up a little. I want to paint the exterior and need to know the proper way to do it.

There is no existing paint on the boat and the surface has many scratches from years of use. Is it ok to prime the boat with the oil based metal primer found at Lowes or do I need something else? What kind of paint is best once the primer has been applied?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Jon Boat Restoration

Sand the old surface very lightly with 220 or 320 just to remove the big stuff, wash the boat down with vinegar and water 50/50, get about 3 cans of zinc chromate primer in a spray can and lightly mist the aluminum, select your friends favorite color of rustoleum paint, roll the paint on using the roll and tip method.....

Thanks for your help, Bob!

Can the zinc chromate primer be purchased at Lowes/Home Depot?

Re: Jon Boat Restoration

I used the Rustoleum Camo paint on mine and it turned out great. It's been on there for 5 years with no peeling. I painted the whole thing olive drab green but if I had to do it over I'd paint the interior light tan. That green gets WAY hot in the summer sun.

Re: Jon Boat Restoration

Thanks for the tip on using light colored paint on the interior! I am going to prime this weekend and will start posting pics of the before and after.
