I have a 1989 OMC 2.3 LITER Ford, I have given the boat a general tune up and it runs great. However, there is a bump every few minutes while running WOT. After some research on this site I believe it is the clutch. I will be ordering one but need to know what else I need to order along with the clutch. Is there a clutch repair kit or something, if somebody could tell me evertything I may need.

Also I have the SELOC manual, and can not find where it talks about the clutch any help please.

Replacing the dog clutch in an outdrive is not a walk in the park. I'm not convinced that's what's wrong, either. Shift cable, u-joints, etc etc. When it comes to a tune-up, boats need more than a carb rebuild and ignition parts.

That you're asking for everything you'll need to proceed makes me think you'd be better off bringing your drive to a reputable boat mechanic with OMC experience than trying to do this yourself.

To each his own, though. First you're going to need an actual service manual, not the Seloc one. Find them on eBay.

I will try and get another manual, thanks. Yes it would be better to take the boat to a mechanic, however the closest one is over 60 miles and after having my boat there to winterize for over 2 months and them charging me over $700.00 I dont think I will be taking it back, summer will be over before I get it back. Once I get the manual I'll post again.

Ok so I went ahead and took the lower gear case apart and am down to the gears and clutch. The foward and reverse gears look fine but the clutch is a little jagged. I have a clutch on order but will i need new seal kit wheni get ready to piece back together, what about throttle cables.. Anything else, this is getting into my pocket book..

Thanks

Transom cable should be replaced if you haven't done so. It's good insurance. Cobras eat gears pretty quickly when that cable goes bad.

When tested it shouldn't require more than 2.5lbs of force to move. I used a fish scale after disconnecting it from everything.

Re: Omc 2.3 Liter Clutch

Thanks, so I bought new throttle cables and have replaced that, could the bump be from the old cables and not the clutch, would it be wise to assemble everything and run the boat and see if that fixed the problem and if not then replace the clutch?

Trying to do this as simply as possible, I know its not going to be cheap but trying to not get a divorce while doing this, ha ha.

Replacing one thing at a time until the problem is fixed is what I am going for, so would you try the cables first and go from there..

Re: Omc 2.3 Liter Clutch

I think what is happening is your outdrive is jumping out of gear. The bump that you are hearing sounds like you hit something underwater with the drive. Right? If this is the case, you need to replace the gearset or you might be able to adjust the transom bracket shift cable. At any rate, don't run it when it bumps like that. The bumping will get worse as the gears wear down. It doesn't take much to trash a gearset. Also, make sure you have the red shift cable that goes into the outdrive. If its black, it needs to get replaced. That was a recall item by OMC in the late `80s and early `90s. Check out Stuart Hastings website. http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/ This will help a ton!

Correct me if I am wrong but the back side of the gear is the clutch dog. Also, once you get the bump like you are getting, it's too late..the clutch dog is basically ruined. To keep this from happening again, make sure the cable is properly adjusted.
