40 hp selectrishift 1967 maybe starter problems?

hey guys, thanks for the previous help. motor been sitting for years, pulled plugs ran lube in cylinders,motor turns freely- good compression, put plugs back in, try to crank, barley turn motor over, just whomp, whomp, whomp, ha ha. --- anyway im thinking rebuild starter, can i check it myself. with plugs out ,hit starter spins easily

check you battery cables!!! connections must be clean and shiney. also if original cables, a nick in the cable, causes them to corrode from the inside, creating resistance, and not providing sufficient power to the starter.

tashasdaddy, you just saved me bout 75.00$ was the battery cables not the starter. thanks very much
