What Prop To Use?

I have a 2002 Honda 9.9 power thrust 25" shaft. My boat is a 1992 16' valco bayrunner and weighs approx. 230 lbs. The honda was used as trolling motor for a 24 Wellcraft Coastal W/A. I sold the Wellcraft but kept the Honda. The first time I tried to use the Honda I lost the prop shaft and prop (prop was brand never used).
I intend to use it on the bayrunner for this summer. I don't remmeber the pitch or dia.

My question is what blade/dia/pitch should I use for this size of boat. I know it is not enough to plain the boat out, but at least I will be able to use it this summer trolling and getting from point A to B (would like to get there a quickly as possible).

Also, does anybody know what 16 Valco Bayrunner, 1992, side console steering with a 25" transom would be rated for?
I have asked Klamath as theyt bought Valco and they were no help. I have estimates ranging from 45hp to 90 hp.

Thanks
Brad

Don't know why it wouldn't plane a 230 Lb boat unless its not intended to plane or your going to load it down. A 9.9 should be good for about 21mph
on a reasonably light boat 230 sounds light to me. Are you sure its 230lbs with a side console and a 25" transom?I think Honda is your best bet for prop size unless someone here has a similar setup. I know nothing about the Valco
but a 25" transom on a 16 ft boat seems unusual to me.

Re: What Prop To Use?

Thanks for the reply -
The plate on the boat with the information says it is a BR-15. I can barely make it out. It actually measures 15'-10". The max hp rating is worn off. My beam on this boat is juest under 5'-8" at it's widest point. NADA Guides says this boat weigh 240 lbs.
As for the transom, it had been cut down to accomdate a 20" shaft motorby the previous owner (I'm going to restore it to it's original height). The wood on the transom was bad so I removed it for replacement. When I did, under the cut out portion of the transom was writing in permanent blue maker ink saying - 25" trans.

I don't understand "honda is my best bet... Do you mena I should call a Honda dealer?

Thanks
Brad

Yes A good dealer should be able to recommend a prop.
There is a fellow hwsiii on here with a program that can select props if enough info He will need the gear ratio among other. Check some of the other posts You find him

Steele is right, it should do about 21 to 22 MPH with a 9" x 12" aluminum prop. Here are my calculations for that motor with a 12" Pitch prop and a total allup weight of the boat at 800 pounds Brad. Thank you steele, and I found the gear ratio on your motor to be 2.41 Brad, check this for me please.

Re: What Prop To Use?

I found an old prop for the 9.9 Honda that I can get free. It's blades are a little dinged up but definitely fixable. It is a Honda prop 4 blade 9-1/4 x 8 (inch)
Would this work for my application?

I am thinking with the change in diameter and the 4 blades you are probably going to max WOT at about 6,100 to 6,300 RPM and about 16 miles and hour. You need to buy a Tiny Tach so you can make sure you don't over spool the motor too much with the RPM, it only cost about $ 40. Hopefully it will go fast enough to plane, but I am not positive it will. Free is a good price, try it you have nothing to lose.

I agree with the tach. Going to get one this weekend and hopefully I'll be rigged by next weekend to try it out.

Again thanks for the help.

Brad, you are very welcome and please get back with me on the speeds and RPM you get from this prop for my database.
