This was pretty cool . . . I keep my electronics in a waterproof Pelican case. So when I take them out to use on the boat that day I put my 3 lb Asus netbook back in the case and take it along in the boat.

Past Sat. we launched on Lake Champlain and were anchored in a nice cove to get out of the 20-30 mph occasional gust of wind. It was beautiful out and just over 60 degrees. I was fishing and my wife was lounging around reading magazines, drinking some wine and sucking up some rays.

So I stopped for lunch around 11:45 and turned on the laptop and checked the weather at: http://www.weather.gov/radar_tab.php

Just click on the map and your area will pop up.

I always check this site before I leave to launch the boat and everything looked clear even far to our West.

So that Sat the weather stations were not predicting rain till late afternoon. That's why we went out early and were going to get off the water before 3 pm.

As soon as I turned on the laptop i saw the radar map and it now showed a rain storm with red and yellow which can mean severe rain storms. If those red and yelow cells are bordered by a yellow line it's even worse and can throw off tornado activity in it's path. Yet the skies were clear all around us. But the cells were only about 45 minutes to our West and seemed to be traveling fast towards us. I said we needed to head back to the launch quickly because I wanted to get off the water and get the cover back on the boat before it rains.

My wife said " it's not going to rain, it's beautiful out right now" famous last words :D We were going to use the boat on Sun too and nothing worse than having to deal with sopping wet carpets the whole day.

Got the boat back on the trailer and watched a few boaters just launching and clueless as to what's coming shortly. They were just jet skiers, so no reason to warn them :D Who do I look like Paul Revere?

Just as we were pulling out of the parking lot the skies opened up and it rained pretty hard for the rest of the day and heavier all night.

Now I was only able to do this because I have the Verizon access card which I can connect from just about anywhere. True it's $55 a month for their 5 GB plan or $25 for their limited plan, but I use it for my business too and it's great when I'm in hotel rooms with slow or no interent access or staying over relatives houses that are too cheap for premium channels. I hate commercials.

I've even been watching TV through a Slingbox that is connected to my bedroom TV while anchored. It connects through the internet into my bedroom DVR unit and I can watch HBO or recorded programs from anywhere. I know, I know it sounds sick to watch TV while in my boat, but if it was bigger and I was at a marina what's the diff. most boats have access to cable or use a dish in a marina.

But that ability to see the weather coming at me on my laptop was pretty cool. We finished our lunch in the car and hit the motel dry as bones for a little sack time before dressing to go out to dinner. It poured outside for the rest of the day and night and that sounded a lot better to me than when it pours into my bimini cause I know at some point I have to get the boat back on the trailer. Don't like doing that during a lightning storm.

Gotta luv technology!

Very cool indeed.
Just got me a little Netbook -- Samsung N120. I'm hoping to use it just like you do with yours.

Ya, these netbooks are hot. If anyone is interested I bought the Asus 1000HA It can be found for 329 now. It was 413 a few months ago. 10 inch screen. 160 GB hard drive. Asus invented the netbook from some of the reviews I've read.

These netbooks are so small because they don't have DVD/CD drives built in. You don't need one. You can buy an external for $65 but most will never need it. Load any programs on a cheap 8 GB flash drive about $20 using another computer and just plug in the flash drive. You can download movies to a flash drive with certain software programs.

They have a new model the 1000he that my son just bought for 375 minus a 30 rebate. Pretty much the same unit. Has blue tooth and a few other bells.

This is mine. I like the white as it shows no fingerprints like the black does.

This is a good store to buy online from. I've bought cameras and stuff from them. But search pricegrabber.com you might find it even cheaper.

These netbooks are great to bring along on your boat and for traveling. I bring it with me when I go to lunch in a restaurant and read the "latest" news while I'm eating. This is why newspapers are struggling. I've even found myself surfing through iboats :)

That's a very cool way to use tech on your boat. I have the HP mini 1000 netbook but alas no network card. I was considering getting one but $60 a month is a little steep and I was worried about the data caps at 5Gb.

Expidia, I was wondering if watching all that tv via your slingplayer or general surfing has ever put you close to that 5Gb cap?

believe it or not I think I read somewhere you would have to like watch tv 8 hours a day during the month to go over the 5 GB.
I don't know. You could google it and someone will have listed how much you have to use it to go over. I can't see watching that much TV on a 10 inch screen (unless it's porn :D :) :D)

What happens with the card which is great is that you can leave it connected to the internet all day and it stays in a dormant state until you hit a key and access the web.

I don't think I've ever used 1.5 GB yet.

My Daughter is still living with us while she is going for a degree. If it was not for her, I'd dump my Time Warner $45 a month connection and just use the $55 per month card. Most of my day is at my office where I'm using a company connection anyway.

I was paying $45 a month before to have 5 GB access on my Treo and that only haas a 4 inch screen. For $10 more now I use the Netbook and cut the Treo data connection. I can still send and receive email on the Treo without a data plan. I can't send pics from phone but I can from the laptop and that's "always" with me.

I love to sit in the car while my Wife is food shopping and I'm watching sports or movies. See what a nice guy this access card has made me into . . . I offer to go with my wife food shopping, I just don't have to set foot in the supermarket anymore :D

Using a wireless access card is the internet equivilent of cutting your landline phone and going with only your cell. I know a lot of people who don't have a landline anymore.

Soon competition will offer an all in one package. It ticks me off to pay $45 to Time Warner and another $55 to Verizon for Broad band access. But as they say . . . with technology, being on the leading edge is also the bleeding edge!

Someone will start offering a total package. But for now Verizon has the best 3G coverage. The places I frequent does not even have 3G AT&T coverage yet.

Verizon and others will sell you the card cheap or free to lock you in to a two year contract. I chose to pay $80 for the card and only had to sign up for a year cause I know cheaper plans will be coming down the road. The card can be used with most providers.

I looked at the HP mini. The ASUS just had better features, better reviews and was cheaper. Sony just came out with a really cool model too.

I actually already have access to the Navionics hot maps on my Huminbird GPS combo on board. As a bonus when I bought the unit it came with their weather sense accessory which shows the rising and falling pressures right on the screen. It gives you advanced warning but nothing compared to viewing the actual live Doppler radar right on the 10 inch screen. XM satellite has a radar feed that can show on Lowrance units but it's like another $10 a month on top of your $10 a month radio subscription. I don't know if it's available stand alone for $10 a month. It probably is.

My VHS CG weather alert would probably only break in with a warning for a severe storm. Any storm on a 15 foot aluminum boat can turn ugly so the warning 45 minutes away viewing the live radar could be a lifesaver.

I can out run scattered storms on a flat lake at 35 mph but if the wind kicks up and the 3 footers start, I'm down to a 7 mph crawl.

This ASUS was dirt cheap compared to the original GPS combo original investment. I paid $997 plus another $49 (instead of $149 for current year) for last years Navionics map chip.

It's amazing what one can have in computing power in the palm of their hand for $329 with no tax and free shipping . . . life is good for us techies.

But make sure you use a waterproof case. The large Pelicans cases that fit it can be found online for about $35. If you get any water on a laptop it's toast

pretty cool.

Now I was expecting the Tash to say . . . "I would never think about using a laptop on a boat . . Boat's are for fishing and cruising".

Wasn't it you that said you see no need for a stereo on a boat?

I could be wrong . . . it might have been one of the other regulars :)

While I agree that the technology is cool, what I am most impressed with is that you had the smarts to keep abreast of what the weather was doing. I have been out on enough SARS that involved a nice day turning into a lousy day, to wish that everyone had your dedication to safe boating.

Failure to check and recheck the weather is a really stupid reason to die, yet lots of people do exactly that each year. Thanks for the post and thanks for the good example.

I have the Acer and love it. Mine has the 8.9" screen, my boss got an HP with the 10.1". That 1 inch makes all the difference. If anyone is considering one of these (and I can't recommend them enough) go for the 10.1" display. I don't have an aircard for mine and I'd absolutely love to have one but the price is just too high. I'm hoping they drop significantly in the future. My dad has an identical Acer to mine but his has AT&T 3G built into it. Pretty sweet but his company foots the bill.
