well in my next step of learning about outboard i need to learn about the distributor. i know some but i dotn know how it works. how to fix it. common parts to replace. how to adjust them etc etc

i need to learn mainly cause im thinking about fixing up my merc. it is a 500merc of the year of 1961. anything related to this could help in a way.

most likely i wont have good spark or no spark etc and i need to take a look at the magneto right.

any articles i could read or things that u could tell me would be nice:D

Re: Distributor/ ignition

that is not the best motor to learn on, to many parts not available. basically the belt fromt he flywheel turn the shaft in the alternator, the cam on the shaft opens and closes the points. allowing a charge to build up, it also turn the rotor, the rotors function is to apply power to the plugs, at the time the points make contact, the rotor is making contact the the spark plug lead, send spark to the plug.

check the availablity to get parts before putting money into it.

i know you want to learn, and i don't want to dampen your spirit. keep at it.
